2. Resin bed — These beads exchange hardness minerals for sodium ions. The space above the bed allows it to expand during backwash.
3. Riser & distributor — In this downflow service example, water passes down through resin, into the bottom distributor and up the center tube to the house.
4. Brine tank — Salt dissolves in water here to make brine. The control draws that brine through the resin during regeneration to restore its ability to collect hardness.

Do I need all four?
No. Choose equipment for a measured problem or a clear goal. Match each treatment stage to the water test and the result you want.
Is hard water unsafe?
Calcium and magnesium hardness is mainly a scale and cleaning issue. Those minerals by themselves are not a health reason to soften drinking water. A separate concern, such as lead, needs a test for that substance. USGS explains water hardness ↗
