2. Activated carbon — Carbon contains countless tiny pores. Certain compounds cling to those surfaces, a process called adsorption. Chlorine also reacts at the carbon surface as water passes through.
3. Collection tube — Filtered water reaches the bottom distributor and travels up the riser to the house.
4. Backwash drain — During cleaning, the valve sends backwash water to a protected drain connection. This is separate from the treated-water outlet.

Reduce disinfectant taste and odor at the taps and showers served by the system.
Size it for showers, taps and appliances running together. Include access to the bypass and any backwash drain.
Read the rating that matches your complaint.
- Disinfectant
- The supplier’s water report identifies chlorine or chloramine. Look for that reduction claim on the exact filter and cartridge combination.
- Flow
- Gallons per minute, or GPM, is how fast water passes through. Add the fixtures likely to run together and compare that demand with the filter’s rated treatment flow.
- Capacity
- The gallon rating describes how much water the filter treats under its test conditions. Record the installation date and follow the product’s time and gallon limits.
A real specification sheet, in plain English
Pentair’s rotary-valve Carbon Filtration System 1.0 lists an 11.6 GPM service flow, 400,000-gallon chlorine capacity and a 10 psi pressure drop at that service flow. Those numbers describe three different things: treatment speed, capacity and resistance to flow.
Illustrative household demand: two 2 GPM showers plus a 1.5 GPM faucet total 5.5 GPM. That is the kind of simultaneous use we compare with the rating. The 10 psi figure was measured at 11.6 GPM; it is not the pressure loss at every flow.

What will I have to replace?
- Cartridge system
- Swap the filter on its time or gallon schedule. Leave room to open the housing and budget for replacement cartridges.
- Media tank
- More carbon for larger water demand. The media still wears out; a backwashing tank also needs a drain. Backwashing cleans the bed; replace the carbon at the specified service interval.
How does carbon work—and what about chloramine?
Carbon has a huge network of tiny pores. Certain compounds cling to that surface, and chlorine reacts with the media. Water needs enough contact with the right media. Running too much water through a small filter can reduce its performance.
Chlorine and chloramine need different filter selection. We’ll check which disinfectant your supplier uses and choose equipment rated for that job.
How do I keep the filter working properly?
Keep to the maker’s replacement and cleaning schedule. Removing disinfectant makes sanitary maintenance especially important. A slow tap can mean a clogged cartridge; a filter can also be exhausted before the taste changes.
Can carbon reduce lead or PFAS, too?
Some models are certified for those reductions. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic claims such as chlorine taste and odor; NSF/ANSI 53 includes health-related reduction claims. Read the listed contaminant alongside the standard number. The model’s listing tells you what was tested.
