Start with the deposit you want to reduce, the water’s hardness and the amount the house uses at once. The two approaches below have different operating requirements.

- Water passes permanent magnets around a pipe. HALO describes the intended benefit as reduced sticking scale.
- Day-to-day ownership
- The ION unit has no conditioning cartridge to replace, salt to add, electrical supply or regeneration drain.
- Choosing a size
- Use the published conditioning-flow limit. HALO lists its 1-inch ION-9 at 9 GPM and ION-12 at 12 GPM. GPM means gallons per minute: the water moving through while fixtures run together.
CITRUS CONDITIONING
NuvoH2O
- The mechanism
- A cartridge releases a citric-acid formula that binds with hardness minerals. That binding process is called chelation.
- Day-to-day ownership
- The formula is used up, so cartridge changes are part of ownership. Budget the replacement set and leave space to open its housing.
- Choosing a system
- NuvoH2O’s guidance excludes water below pH 7.3 or above 25 grains per gallon of hardness. pH describes how acidic or alkaline the water is; a hardness test measures its calcium and magnesium.
Decide how you’ll judge the result.
Use the original complaint as the starting point: crust on a showerhead, deposits on heating equipment or frequent cleaning. Record that condition before installation and compare it over time. A hardness reading will stay high because these approaches leave calcium and magnesium in the water. Dried droplets can still leave mineral spots.
What makes useful evidence for scale control?
A useful test names the treatment, water chemistry, temperature, flow and amount of scale before and after treatment. Compare those conditions with your home. HALO’s product sheet gives the manufacturer’s explanation and examples; ask for the underlying scale-test report when weighing the performance claim.
For a combined unit, read the carbon filter’s taste-and-odor rating separately from its scale-control claim. Each stage has its own job and upkeep.
A cartridge schedule you can actually plan around
For example, NuvoH2O’s Manor Trio sediment/carbon system specifies replacement at six months or 50,000 gallons. The cartridge and two filter stages are separate consumable parts.
Illustrative usage: at 200 gallons a day, 50,000 gallons takes about 250 days. The six-month interval comes first, so that household would plan around time rather than waiting to reach the gallon figure.
How do the water limits affect the choice?
A test of 18 grains per gallon and pH 7.6 falls within NuvoH2O’s stated hardness guidance and the Manor Trio’s pH range. A result of 28 grains per gallon is above that hardness limit. These are examples of screening the water before buying equipment.
Then compare the model’s flow rating with simultaneous household use and make room for service. The local water guide helps you start with the supplier’s records; a tap-water test supplies the values for equipment selection.
