What Ultra-Low NOx actually changes
Ultra-Low NOx means a cleaner-burning gas burner.
NOx means nitrogen oxides: gases produced when fuel burns that contribute to air pollution. Utah limits those emissions from natural-gas water heaters sold or installed in its mapped air-quality areas. A tank listed online may look right and still have the wrong burner for your address.

What Ultra-Low NOx means
NOx means nitrogen oxides, gases that form when fuel burns and contribute to air pollution. Ultra-Low NOx describes a burner designed to keep those emissions low.

The existing vent and gas line
The new heater still has to work with the vent type, gas supply, clearances, and manufacturer’s installation instructions.
The restraint and surrounding piping
Plan the tank’s restraints, supply connectors, drainage and clearances alongside the heater. The existing connections show what can be reused and what needs changing.
House pressure and expansion control
If the relief valve has been dripping, we also check water pressure and thermal expansion. Replacing only the valve may leave the reason it opened untouched.
Why the installed price changes
The model is only the first line of the job.
After the emissions class, the vent, gas line, restraint, pressure equipment, drain, permit, removal, and warranty still matter.

Seismic restraints secure the tank to the structure. Venting carries combustion gases outdoors, and pressure-control equipment manages the water supply. These connections belong in the installation plan alongside the selected Ultra-Low NOx model.

Does this mean I must replace my working heater?
No. This rule limits the sale and installation of equipment; being inside the map does not by itself mean your working heater must come out. Heaters made before July 1, 2018 and heaters in recreational vehicles are excluded. Mobile-home heaters have a different emissions limit. There is also a narrow replacement exception for some heaters that supply both hot water and home heating—check that case before ordering.
