A replacement toilet needs to fit the room, the drain position and the people using it. We check those details before removing the old toilet, then inspect the floor connection before the new one goes down.

The measurements that decide the fit.

Rough-in is the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the center of the floor outlet. For a conventional two-bolt toilet, the bolt centers give the usual reference. Measure from the wall surface, allowing for any baseboard in the way.

Drain location

12 inches is a common residential rough-in. Toilets made for 10 or 14 inches solve different layouts. Match the toilet’s published drawing to the existing connection.

Round or elongated bowl

Elongated bowls offer more front-to-back space. Round-front bowls can help in tight bathrooms. Check door swing and the remaining space in front.

Seat height

Bowl rim height and finished seat height are different measurements. A taller bowl can make sitting and standing easier for some users; shorter users may prefer a lower seat.

One-piece or two-piece

Two-piece toilets have a separate tank and its gasket and bolts. One-piece toilets integrate tank and bowl. Skirted bases conceal the trapway and can change mounting and supply access.

Choose performance as well as water use.

WaterSense-labeled toilets are independently certified for both water efficiency and flushing performance. The 1.28-gallon Cimarron shown in our model is one example of a modern gravity toilet.

Gravity flush

Stored tank water supplies the flush. Flapper and canister designs release that water in different ways.

Dual flush

Separate full and reduced flush choices let the user select a volume for the waste load.

Pressure assisted

A pressure vessel inside the tank drives a forceful flush. It has distinct operating sound and replacement parts.

The work behind a replacement.

We isolate and disconnect the supply, drain and remove the old toilet, and expose the flange. The floor, flange and supply valve are checked before installation continues.

Rebuild the base if needed

Broken bolt slots, a low flange or damaged flooring change the job. We explain what we found and price the needed repair before setting the new toilet.

Set and connect

Establish stable support, install a new seal, secure the bowl, assemble the tank when separate and connect the supply without strain.

Test it in use

Check every joint, run repeated flushes, confirm the bowl refills and the tank shuts off, and make sure the toilet stays solid under use.

What to include in the conversation.

Tell us whether you are supplying the toilet, whether the existing bowl rocks or leaks, and whether you want a bidet seat. Photos of the whole toilet, supply valve and base help. A replacement estimate should make the toilet, removal, installation materials, disposal and any flange or supply repair easy to understand.

Can the drain stay where it is?

A toilet selected for the existing rough-in can usually use the same outlet position. Moving the toilet to another location involves drain and vent planning as part of a remodel.

Should I replace the supply hose too?

We inspect the hose, nuts and gaskets during replacement. An aged, damaged or poorly fitting connector is replaced with one that fits the new toilet without tension or kinks.

Can a new toilet cure frequent clogs?

A better-performing toilet can help when the old fixture is the problem. An obstruction or defect farther down the drain still needs its own repair.
