We got a call from a homeowner in Sandy with a tenant who had lots of water leaking out of their shower—an absurd amount, basically would not shut off. It was an older Price Pfister three-handle shower valve, and she said a handyman had been working on it earlier. When we were dispatched out, we quickly determined that the rebuild job was no good.
The seat had never been changed over the years. The seat is the portion that seals against the leak and allows the stem to seat properly, and that was eroded away to almost nothing and stripped out of the valve body. She decided she had enough of this, so we went ahead and upgraded her to a Moen single-handle pressure-balance valve.
We carefully opened the tile with care, pulled the old three-handle body, and changed it out to the Moen. We reconnect to the existing hot, cold, tub, and shower piping, got the new valve set, installed new trim, restored water, and tested for leaks and proper hot and cold temperature control. That old valve was done for, and the new single-handle setup put solid shutoff and control back in the shower.
