CPVC leak and PEX repipe in Sandy remodel

We got called out last minute to help with a leak in Sandy. The home was empty and under renovations, and the remodel crew had accidentally snapped off one of the fixture valves. That caused a pretty substantial flood. The piping was CPVC—one of those earlier plastic domestic lines that is not too common in Utah, but it still shows up.

This repair needed a time-sensitive response and careful work. CPVC gets brittle with age, especially with Utah’s dry heat sucking the moisture right out of it, so it cracks easily. We decided the smart move was not just a tiny patch. We opened the walls a bit higher, cut out a larger section of the old CPVC, and replaced a lot of it with PEX so the remaining brittle pipe would not keep failing on us.

We capped what needed capping in the main basement room, installed new quarter-turn fixture shutoffs where the old stops had been, tied the new PEX into the serviceable runs, restored water, and tested. If you have CPVC in your house, be aware of how fragile it can get. We left the lines sealed and the new valves ready for the remodel to move forward.
