We were called out to Sandy because this Kohler shower valve had no hot water. Upon inspection we determined the balance spool had gone bad. That’s the part that mixes and balances the hot and cold so you actually get temperature control at a single-handle tub/shower valve.
We shut the water down, pulled the handle and trim, and got into the valve body. The failed balance spool came out of the cartridge area so we could put in a standard replacement. This job stayed in the normal single-handle shower cartridge replacement lane—no seized extractors, no special-order parts.
Luckily we roll prepared and always have 400-plus parts on our vans, so we had what we needed right there. We installed the replacement, restored water, checked for leaks, and verified proper hot and cold operation and temperature control.
We got it done same trip, no drama.
