Got a call from a South Jordan customer whose laundry would not shut off. Showed up expecting a bad washing machine valve. Turned out the original install was wrong from day one. No P-trap on the drain, and no proper vent either. Thats why they had been smelling sewer gas in the laundry area.
Pulled the old setup out and started fresh. New laundry box mounted to the studs with brass quarter turn ball valves for hot and cold. ProPress copper on the supply lines. New ABS drain with a real P-trap installed at the right depth so it actually holds a water seal and keeps sewer gas out of the room. Studor vent on the riser above the trap so the drain flows properly without pulling the seal on the trap every time water rushes through.
While we were already in the wall the customer mentioned someday wanting to add a laundry sink in that same space. Used a laundry box with a future stub out built in so when they add the sink later its a much smaller project. The rough in is already there waiting for them.
Tested the supplies for leaks at every joint, ran water down the drain to verify the trap holds. Customer got a laundry hookup that actually works the way its supposed to, no more weird smells, and a head start on the laundry sink project for whenever.
Not every laundry call is just a bad valve. Sometimes the original install was the problem.
