Utah gas utilities & homeowner responsibilities

- Demand / load
- How much gas the equipment needs. An appliance label gives its fuel input in BTU per hour; add the relevant appliances when assessing a shared pipe.
- BTU/h / input rating
- British thermal units per hour: the rate of fuel energy going into an appliance. Heat output is what it delivers after losses, so use the input rating for gas-supply calculations.
- Flow / CFH
- How much gas passes a point over time. CFH means cubic feet per hour. A cubic foot is a volume, like a box one foot on each side.
- Pressure / pressure drop
- Pressure is the push on the gas. A pressure difference moves it along a pipe. The reduction in pressure along the route while gas flows is called pressure drop.
- Capacity
- How much gas a pipe, meter or other part can deliver at the specified pressure. The connected appliances determine how much capacity is needed.
- Branch / upstream / downstream
- A branch takes gas from a shared route to part of the system. Upstream means toward the supply; downstream means in the direction gas travels toward the appliances.
- Meter / regulator
- The meter measures gas use. A regulator controls pressure.
- Shutoff / sediment trap
- A shutoff is a valve that stops supply to a section. A sediment trap is a capped pocket arranged to catch debris before it reaches an appliance’s gas controls.
- Inlet / manifold
- The inlet is where gas enters an appliance. The manifold distributes it to the burners inside. Pressure requirements at these two places can differ.
- Combustion air / venting
- Combustion air is air needed to burn fuel. Venting carries the resulting exhaust away.
- Clearance / access
- Clearance is required space around equipment or piping. Access means being able to reach a part for inspection or service.
- Code / commissioning
- Code means installation rules adopted for the job’s location. Commissioning means checking and starting equipment according to its instructions, then confirming that it operates as required.

Utah homeowners have seen several names on their gas bills. Older inspection records and service stickers often use the name the utility had when the work was done.
Mountain Fuel → Questar Gas
Mountain Fuel Supply Company became Questar Gas Company on January 1, 1998. Utah Public Service Commission archived record.
The Dominion era
Dominion completed its combination with Questar on September 16, 2016. This is the ownership change behind the Dominion name many Utah customers remember. Company announcement archived by Utah PSC.
Enbridge Gas Utah
Enbridge closed its acquisition of Questar Gas and Wexpro on May 31, 2024. Its announcement was released June 3. The current customer brand in Utah is Enbridge Gas Utah. Enbridge acquisition announcement; company report confirming the May 31 closing date.

Which side
of the meter?
For a typical home served by Enbridge Gas Utah, the utility maintains its service line and meter. The homeowner maintains the piping after the meter, including lines to outbuildings, patios and other appliances. The utility can identify the ownership boundary at an unusual installation.
Utility side
Questions about a new service, meter changes or utility-controlled restoration go through the utility’s process.
Customer side
The owner arranges maintenance and repairs for house piping, appliance branches and private outdoor lines.
Rental property
For a non-emergency repair or change, contact the property manager or owner to arrange the responsible contractor. A suspected leak still requires immediate evacuation and emergency reporting.

Utility markings
and private buried lines.
Blue Stakes tells participating utility operators where digging is planned so they can mark the underground lines they own and maintain. Lines beyond the meter, or other privately installed utilities, may need a private locator—a separate service that finds privately owned underground lines. Tell the excavator about backyard gas lines, detached-building supplies and propane lines so those routes are included in the locating plan.
Request utility markings and arrange private locating before digging. Check the ticket responses and Blue Stakes timing rules so the planned excavation uses current markings.
