A Salt Lake City homeowner reached out because they wanted to upgrade their outdoor living space and make it more functional year-round. The plan was to add a gas connection that could support a portable, temporary multi-fuel generator as well as a future outdoor fireplace.Safety First: The Calculations Any time additional gas appliances are being added, the first step is making sure the existing system can actually handle the load safely. We evaluated the layout of the home, traced the existing gas piping, and ran full gas demand calculations. The numbers checked out, which meant the system could support the added demand without cutting corners or creating issues down the line. Once that was confirmed, we laid out a clean routing that would keep everything accessible and serviceable. Why I Stick to Black Iron I’m still pretty old school when it comes to gas work. A lot of plumbers will save some time by running flexible gas pipe, but I continue to thread black iron whenever possible. Black iron has been safely delivering natural gas for well over a century, and I constantly run into older homes around Salt Lake City where the original black iron piping is still in excellent condition. That kind of track record matters to me.It does take more time, and it’s a little more work, but it’s a no-brainer choice in my book. The end result is a solid, permanent installation that’s built to last and easy to service in the future. The homeowner now has a safe, properly sized gas connection ready for their outdoor upgrades, done once and done right.
