Mountain Man Plumbing
Salt Lake City, Utah
This job was actually the beginning of what later turned into a full laundry sink upgrade. The homeowner had been dealing with recurring backups in the laundry line several times a year. They told me they had hired multiple plumbers over time and each one had snaked the drain, but the relief never lasted. The line would slow down again, the standpipe would overflow, and the cycle repeated itself.Once I looked closer, the real problem became obvious. There was no proper cleanout anywhere on the line, which meant every plumber who tried to fix it was forced to run small equipment from the standpipe. Those tools can poke a temporary hole through buildup, but they cannot actually restore a cast iron drain that has years of scale inside it. This home in Salt Lake City had exactly that problem. The scale had grown so thick inside the pipe that the diameter of the drain was drastically reduced. At that point, snaking from the standpipe was never going to be enough.I explained to the homeowner that the only way to solve the issue for good was to open the floor so I could reach the line directly. Once the concrete was removed and the pipe exposed, I was finally able to access the section that had been causing all the trouble. The inside was almost completely closed off from heavy scale. I cleaned the pipe correctly, restored full flow, and most importantly added proper cleanouts so the line could be serviced easily in the future. The homeowner finally has a drain that works the way it should, without yearly backups or temporary fixes. What started as a frustrating recurring problem turned into a long term solution once the real cause was uncovered and the line was repaired the right way.
