## Where is the water escaping?
Those names all refer to the outdoor faucet where your hose connects. The location of the leak helps narrow down the repair.
### Keeps dripping when off →
### A drip that never finishes
A frost-free faucet releases the water left in its tube after you close it. That drainage should finish. A continuing drip points to water getting past the internal seal. A worn washer, debris or a damaged valve seat can cause it.
**What to do next**
Close the handle gently. Extra force wears the sealing parts. We identify the faucet and inspect its washer and seat before choosing a repair kit or replacement.

### Leaks around the handle →
### Water around the turning stem
The stem is the rod turned by the handle. Packing seals around that moving rod. Worn or loose packing can let water escape behind the handle while the faucet runs.
**What to do next**
A sound faucet body can often be rebuilt. The packing and stem have to match the model; even the direction a packing nut turns can differ between brands.

### The vacuum breaker needs attention
The small cap above the spout covers an air valve that helps protect the drinking-water supply. Dirt, a damaged seal or freeze damage can make it leak during use.
**What to do next**
We inspect the cap and internal parts, then fit the matching repair kit when the body is sound. Leave the air openings clear; plugging a leaking opening defeats its job.

### Leaks at the hose connection →
### Start with the hose washer
A garden hose normally seals with a flat rubber washer inside its female coupling. A missing or hardened washer, a crooked coupling or damaged faucet threads can leak as soon as the water comes on.
**What to do next**
With the faucet off, remove the hose and inspect its washer and coupling. Tape on the hose threads does not restore a worn washer. A split faucet outlet needs a closer look.
### Water appears inside the house →
### A freeze split can hide until spring
A split in the long tube can stay dry while the indoor valve is closed. Open the faucet and water reaches the split, leaking into the wall or basement. The first clue may be water indoors while someone waters the yard.
**What to do next**
Stop using the faucet. Close its indoor supply valve if available; use the main water shutoff if leakage continues. We inspect the tube and indoor connection and replace damaged hardware.

### Weak flow or no water →
### Find where the flow is restricted
A kinked hose, blocked nozzle or partly closed indoor shutoff can reduce flow. Compare the faucet with the hose removed. Weak flow there can come from a faucet fault or restriction in the supply pipe.
**What to do next**
If it stopped during freezing weather, leave it out of use and have the frozen section checked. If several fixtures are weak, we check the home’s supply and pressure as well as this faucet.

## The shutoff is inside.
The handle is outdoors. A long rod reaches the seal inside the heated home. See what happens when the faucet opens, drains, or has a hose left attached.

### Water on
### The seal opens inside the home.
Turning the handle moves the long rod. The rubber seal lifts away from its seat on the warm side of the wall. Water travels around the rod and out through the spout.
### Off · hose removed
### The tube empties toward the yard.
The seal closes at the indoor end. With the hose removed, the remaining water drains through the downward-pitched tube. The supply behind the closed seal stays full.
### Off · hose left on
### A closed hose nozzle traps water.
This attached hose has a closed nozzle. Water remains in the faucet after its indoor seal closes. Freezing water can build pressure and split the tube. Disconnect the hose before freezing weather.
### Indoor valve seat
The seat is the opening where a rubber seal stops incoming water. On this frost-free design it sits inside the heated home, beyond the exterior wall. That location is the reason the faucet can drain after shutoff.
### Handle & long rod
The handle turns a rod running through the tube to the indoor seal. The rod must match the faucet’s model and length. A bent rod, damaged handle or worn seal can prevent normal opening and closing.
### Sloping tube
The copper tube carries water through the wall. It falls slightly toward the outdoor outlet so it can empty. The mounting, tube length and indoor connection work together to put the valve in a heated space.
### Vacuum breaker
This air valve helps interrupt a backward siphon from a hose into the drinking-water system. The protective cap sits above the spout. A leaking cap or seal is a common repair item.
### Hose outlet
The hose’s rubber washer seals against the end of this threaded outlet. The hose connection also has to let the faucet drain after use. Remove hoses, splitters and timers for winter on this conventional frost-free design.

## Repair the parts or replace the faucet?
The condition of the body and its indoor connection decides the job. We identify the faucet before ordering a stem, seal or rebuild kit.

The long tube is the part you normally cannot see. Its condition matters as much as the handle outside.
### When a rebuild makes sense
A sound body and valve seat may only need packing, a washer, a stem assembly or vacuum-breaker parts. Matching the brand, model and length prevents a repair that looks right but will not seal.
### When replacement makes sense
A split barrel, damaged seat, broken casting or ruined hose threads can make replacement the dependable repair. We also correct poor support, drainage slope and trouble at the indoor connection.
### What changes the price
Access behind the faucet, the wall thickness, pipe condition and connection type drive the work. An accessible basement connection is a different job from one enclosed above a finished ceiling. We explain the repair and price before starting.

Behind the brick
### A replacement includes the inside connection.
1. **Reach and support the supply.** We isolate the water and expose the connection as needed. Supporting the indoor pipe keeps removal from twisting it inside the wall.
2. **Fit the new faucet to the home.** The inlet reaches the heated side; the tube slopes out and the flange fastens securely to the exterior.
3. **Run it and check both ends.** We check the indoor joint, handle, cap and outlet while running, then confirm shutoff and drainage.

## Similar outside. Different inside.
Find the brand and model on the handle, body or cap. A photo of those markings and the indoor connection helps us match the parts.
Short body · Valve outside
### Standard outdoor faucet
The handle closes a valve close to the outdoor spout. The supply behind it stays full. Seasonal protection usually means closing an indoor shutoff and draining the exposed branch and faucet.
Look for the indoor shutoff and drain provision before cold weather arrives.
Long body · Valve inside
### Frost-free wall faucet
A long operating rod reaches the valve in the heated part of the home. The tube drains outward after shutoff. A hose left attached, an uphill tube or an unheated connection can undermine that protection.
Common examples include Woodford Model 17 and PRIER’s residential wall hydrants.

### Special draining designs
Some faucets have separate automatic drain features that work with a hose attached. Other designs use pressure relief to resist a burst. The model marking tells you which mechanism you have and how to maintain it.
Woodford’s Model 25, 27 and 30 series have automatic draining features. Keep their drain openings clear.

### Buying a repair kit?
Match the exact faucet family and stem length. PRIER supplies parts for older Mansfield-style hydrants, but those parts do not make every PRIER, Mansfield or Woodford faucet interchangeable. Bring the markings and a clear photo when asking for parts.

## Put it away right. Bring it back carefully.
The fall habit that matters most for a conventional frost-free faucet: take the hose off before freezing weather.
### Before the first freeze
1. #### Remove the attachments
Disconnect the hose, splitter, timer and quick connector that can hold water in a conventional frost-free faucet. Drain and store the hose.
2. #### Let the faucet drain
Close a frost-free faucet gently and let its tube empty. For a standard faucet with a seasonal indoor shutoff, close the indoor valve, open the outside faucet and drain the branch using its drain provision. Leave that isolated outdoor faucet open for winter.
3. #### Keep the indoor end warm
Seal cold drafts and keep heat reaching the supply connection. Insulation slows heat loss; the faucet’s indoor valve still needs a heated location.
4. #### Fix trouble before winter
A faucet that will not shut off, slopes back into the wall or has a damaged mounting needs attention before freezing weather.
### The first spring use
1. #### Check the setup
Remove any cover and inspect the handle, cap, mounting and hose threads. Close a faucet that was left open for winter before slowly reopening its indoor supply valve.
2. #### Start without a hose
Run the faucet while someone checks the accessible indoor connection and nearby wall or basement. A split tube may show itself only while the water is on.
3. #### Watch it shut down
Close the handle and let the remaining water drain. Check for a continuing drip or water around the handle and cap.
4. #### Stop if water appears indoors
Shut off the faucet and isolate its supply. Have the tube and connection repaired before attaching the hose and returning to normal use.

### It is frozen right now. What should I do?
Stop using the faucet and locate its indoor shutoff. Do not force a frozen handle or use a torch or open flame. Have the frozen area checked, especially when the pipe disappears into a wall. Water may begin escaping from a damaged tube as it thaws.

That little cap has a job
## Keep hose water out of drinking water.
A hose lying in a bucket, pool or garden sprayer can connect dirty water to the home’s water supply. A pressure drop can try to pull that water backward.
### The air break
A vacuum breaker admits air to interrupt that backward siphon. Many frost-free wall faucets combine it with a check valve, which closes against reverse flow.
### A leaking cap
Repeated spraying from the cap points to a seal or internal part needing service. Keep the vents open and replace damaged parts with the matching kit.
### Timers and closed nozzles
They can leave the faucet under pressure after watering stops. Choose hardware suited to that use and follow its pressure-duration limits. Disconnect attachments before winter on conventional frost-free models.

## Common hose bib questions.
### Is a hose bib the same as a spigot or outdoor faucet?
Yes. Homeowners use hose bib, hose bibb, spigot and outdoor faucet for the valve where a garden hose connects. Sillcock and wall hydrant are other names you will see on parts and instructions.

### Can a frost-free faucet still freeze and burst?
Yes. Conventional frost-free faucets need to drain and have their shutoff end in a heated space. A hose or attachment holding water, incorrect slope or loss of heat can leave water vulnerable to freezing.

### Why does it leak inside only when I turn it on?
A split tube beyond the indoor shutoff fills when the faucet opens. That can send water into the wall even though the faucet stayed dry all winter. An indoor connection can also leak. Stop using it and have both checked.

### Can you repair it without replacing the whole faucet?
Often, a sound body can accept a matching washer, packing, operating rod or vacuum-breaker kit. A split tube, damaged valve seat or broken body generally calls for replacement.

### Will you need to open the wall?
Access depends on the indoor connection. An unfinished basement or existing access panel may expose it. A finished wall or ceiling may need an opening so the connection can be supported, replaced and checked for leaks. We explain that access in the estimate.

### Should I leave a hose timer connected?
Remove it before freezing weather on a conventional frost-free faucet. During watering season, check both products’ pressure-use limits. A closed timer can leave the faucet under pressure for long periods; Woodford’s Model 17 instructions limit continuous pressure exposure to 12 hours.

### Do insulated faucet covers replace winter draining?
A cover reduces exposure to cold air and wind. Drain the faucet and branch as their design requires, and keep the indoor connection warm. A cover cannot empty trapped water.
