Galvanized water lines & cast-iron drains
### Rust inside the pipe restricts flow.
Rust builds up inside galvanized water pipe and leaves less room for water to pass. Scale inside an old cast-iron drain can catch waste and contribute to repeated clogs. We inspect the affected pipe to decide whether a small repair will hold or a longer section needs replacing.
At a Sugar House home, we replaced an outdoor faucet and connected it with new copper to the existing galvanized water line.

### The valves under this sink wouldn’t close.
On our Salt Lake City high-rise faucet job, the old shutoff valves would not close. We coordinated a shutdown with the building, replaced them with quarter-turn valves, then installed the faucet, supplies and drain.
Those valves let us turn off water to just the sink. When they won’t close, we need a working shutoff farther back on the water line. In a condo, that can mean scheduling a building shutdown for a faucet repair.

### Plan the plumbing before the tile.
Choose the tub, shower valve and sink before we run the pipes. Their dimensions set the connection locations, and it’s much easier to adjust them before the wall is tiled. We install the hidden piping first, then return to connect the fixtures after the tile and cabinets are in.
Our Salt Lake City laundry project followed recurring drain trouble. The upgrade included a deep laundry sink with new water and drain connections. You can see the installation in the project photos.

The plumbing beneath Salt Lake City
## Cast in 1875. Uncovered a century later.
Near Second Avenue and Canyon Road, crews dug up an original water main during the city’s 1976 centennial. The 16-inch cast-iron pipe still carried its maker’s mark: **“D.L. 1875.”** The city reported it in excellent condition.
That stamp traced back to Dennis Long & Company in Louisville. Its pipe arrived by rail in 1875 for the City Creek waterworks, bringing pressurized water down to the city.

The city found that pipe in excellent shape after a century underground. Age is useful background, but the condition of the pipe is what we need to see before recommending replacement.

### How much does a Salt Lake City plumbing repair cost?
We price the work before starting. The part is only one piece of the job: reaching a pipe behind tile takes more work than reaching one under an open sink. Send us photos of the problem and the surrounding area so we can talk through the repair.
### Can you help with an urgent leak or no hot water?
Call or text (385) 766-8935 with your address and what is happening so we can check availability. For an active supply leak, close a working fixture shutoff or the main house valve. Salt Lake City Public Utilities takes reports of street-main or meter emergencies at (801) 483-6700.
### Can you work in a condo or coordinate with a landlord?
Yes. Tell us who can approve the work and let us into the property. If the building shares a water supply, include the maintenance contact so we can arrange a shutdown when needed.
### What about permits for a Salt Lake City plumbing remodel?
Installing or changing plumbing can require a permit and inspection. Salt Lake City accepts applications through its Citizen Access Portal. The inspector needs to see the new piping before drywall or tile covers it, so include that visit in the remodel schedule. Work on designated historic properties can also need a Planning review.
### Can a difficult shower valve be repaired without opening the wall?
Often, the worn part inside a shower valve can be replaced through the opening behind the handle. On one Salt Lake City job, we removed a stuck handle and found the matching part so we could repair the shower and leave the valve in the wall. We check for damage to that valve and whether replacement parts are still available.
