We also counted 1,613 parcels built before 1980. Riverton has both the older homes along its original roads and the subdivisions many families grew up in.

### How we counted, and what the dates tell us
Mountain Man analysis, September 11, 2026: 2025 county assessor records joined to county address points inside the city boundary. One address per parcel; housing units above zero; construction years 1800–2026. Eighteen invalid years were excluded. 7,610 ÷ 12,860 = 59.18%.
These are parcel counts, not individual homes or apartments. A construction year does not date the water heater or identify the plumbing currently installed.

## Riverton changed its drinking water.
In 2015, the city switched to buying its drinking water wholesale from Jordan Valley. An old well-water number is a poor starting point for setting up today’s softener.

### Why a Riverton address isn’t the whole answer
Our city-boundary sample intersects two providers in Utah’s 2024 service-area records. Riverton City buys wholesale water from Jordan Valley, while the mapped Jordan Valley retail area is a separate customer-service boundary.
All 12,860 sampled parcels matched one area, with no overlaps. Maps can lag service changes; a polygon match is not a verified customer account.

Two supplies at the same property
### Keep sprinkler water out of the drinking water.
Riverton documented an illegal connection between a property’s irrigation and drinking-water systems in May 2026. It led to a precautionary boil order. **The city lifted that order on May 21 after the required tests came back negative.**

## There’s a story under these streets.
A misplaced connection. Canals that changed where people could live. Riverton’s water history is full of things you’d never notice driving down Redwood Road.
Bear Canyon → Draper → Riverton
### The Draper house on Riverton’s water.
One house had water when the rest of Draper didn’t. Sometimes the situation reversed: the neighbors had water and that house went dry.
Draper Irrigation’s history explains the mystery. Riverton owned Bear Canyon water rights and had a line running west through Draper. When crews dug up the house connection, they found it had been connected to **Riverton’s pipe by mistake.**
Near 12300 South, the two systems ran so close together that a leak sometimes meant digging just to find out whose pipe it was. The book describes this as an old arrangement that had ended.

1934 · The water stopped
### The canals went dry. The farms paid for it.
The Little Canal and Big Canal had opened the bench to farming. During the 1934 drought, the canals ran dry. Sugar-beet production for West Jordan’s factory fell, and families sold, abandoned or lost farms.
Riverton’s historic survey records the drought just two years after the local bank failed, affecting almost 700 accounts.

### Before the drought: the canals moved the town uphill.
The Little Canal opened in 1876 near today’s 1300 West. The larger Big Canal followed in 1881 near 2200 West, allowing more farms and homes on the bench. Piped drinking water arrived in 1908.

### 1961 → 1971 A sewer district waited ten years for its first connections.**+**
The regional district serving Riverton was organized in 1961. Its own history says another decade passed before sewer installation and customer connections began. Today it is Jordan Basin Improvement District, formerly South Valley Sewer District.
At the Jordan Basin treatment plant in Riverton, membranes and ultraviolet disinfection turn wastewater into water suitable for secondary irrigation.
