We recently received a call from a new homeowner in Salt Lake City who was trying to get ahead of winter. He had just moved in and noticed that the outdoor hose bib wasn’t working at all. With cold weather approaching fast, he wanted to make sure nothing in the home was at risk of freezing or bursting, especially since he didn’t know the history of the plumbing.When we arrived and started tracing the line, it became clear why the hose bib had been neglected for so long. The previous owner had installed an extra shutoff valve inside the home in an attempt to hide a deeper issue rather than repair it. The valve cut water to the spigot, but the damaged section of pipe still carried water all the way out to the exterior wall. That meant the line was still vulnerable, and when winter temperatures drop in Salt Lake City, a burst pipe from a failed hose bib can cause thousands of dollars in water damage in just a few minutes.After diagnosing the failure, we opened the wall, removed the compromised section, and rebuilt the entire run correctly. We installed a brand new frost free hose bib with a vacuum breaker so the homeowner now has proper freeze protection and a safe, code-compliant setup. For the connection inside the home, we used pro press fittings instead of torch soldering. It’s safer, cleaner, and avoids bringing an open flame into someone’s house, especially in tight wall cavities or near insulation.Once everything was pressurized and tested, the hose bib functioned perfectly with strong flow and a secure shutoff. What started as a simple concern turned into a full repair that now protects the home for many winters to come. The homeowner loved the peace of mind, and this project is a great example of why a failing spigot should never be ignored. A proper frost free installation gives reliable year-round use and eliminates the risk of hidden freeze damage in older Salt Lake City homes.
