We matched county property records to Holladay’s city boundary. **5,389 of the 10,842 residential parcels date to the 1950s and 1960s alone.** That’s nearly half the sample. Count everything built before 1980 and it reaches 71%.

Mountain Man analysis, September 11, 2026: 2025 county assessor records joined to county address points inside Holladay’s official boundary. One primary address per parcel; housing units above zero; construction years 1800–2026. One invalid residential year was excluded. 7,660 ÷ 10,842 = 70.65%.
Parcels are not individual homes or apartments. These dates describe construction, not the age or material of plumbing currently installed. No owner information or individual property locations are published.

We overlaid the same 10,842 residential parcel address points on Utah’s 2024-reporting-year culinary service boundaries, clipped to Holladay. Every sampled point matched one provider area, with no overlaps.

Holliday Water’s 2025 plan describes treated Spring Creek water, Big Cottonwood Creek water delivered through Salt Lake City, and seasonal wells. Even within this one company, the supply has several sources.
We service and replace water softeners and install drinking-water filtration. We test your water before choosing equipment or a softener setting. A single “Holladay hardness” number would skip too much.

A small piece of the old irrigation system
### Spring Creek still waters gardens.
The company’s plan identifies **46 homes that may use untreated Spring Creek overflow for garden and landscape watering.** Availability varies; it isn’t a second drinking-water supply.
That’s a detail worth knowing when a property has an old watering connection: “Spring Creek water” can mean treated tap water or untreated irrigation water. The two connections must stay separate.

Tanner Reservoir · September 2025 council discussion
### A new reservoir. A pressure increase?
Holladay officials asked that question about the Tanner Reservoir replacement. Salt Lake City’s representative said the pressure was expected to remain similar; the project was about long-term system reliability.

Holladay, below the surface
## The pipes have some stories.
A water trade still explains who maintains certain mains. A century-old house hid a bar behind pocket doors. We went into the court record and historic-property files for these.
1921 · Big Cottonwood Creek
### Why Salt Lake City owns pipes serving Holliday customers.
In 1921, Upper Canal Irrigation traded Big Cottonwood Creek water rights to Salt Lake City, reserving water for domestic use. Salt Lake agreed to build a piped distribution system and provide irrigation water along the canal.
Holliday Water Company formed in 1928 to manage the drinking-water share. A Utah Supreme Court opinion records piped deliveries to shareholders beginning in 1931.
**The arrangement still comes up at City Hall.** In September 2025, Holliday’s representative explained that Salt Lake maintains exchange-related mains along Holladay Boulevard, Highland Drive, Wander Lane and Gunderson Lane.

Ross Hame · Built 1922–1923
### A hidden bar below. Newer bathrooms above.
Ross Hame, above Spring Creek on Holladay Boulevard, had a basement ballroom and a Prohibition-era bar concealed by pocket doors. Beer taps and a tin-lined icebox were part of the setup.
The 2018 National Register record describes much of the house as remarkably intact. Its biggest interior changes were concentrated in the kitchen and two bathrooms. The upstairs bathroom had none of its original fixtures or fittings left.
The ballroom had changed, too: water damage led to carpet replacing its maple floor. The nomination doesn’t identify the source of that water.

### One more detail: the bathroom door that never happened.
A 1924 architect’s sketch shows a doorway from the stair hall into a main-floor bathroom. The historic-property record says that doorway was never built.
### The water bill Some customers own a share of the company.**+**
Holliday Water is a shareholder-owned company. Its published billing information assigns one full share 60,000 gallons of annual non-billed usage, divided between the four quarters. **The fixed base charge still applies.** A property’s share or partial share matters, so check the company’s current terms rather than treating that figure as free water.

### Water comes up out of the washing machine standpipe. Before you snake it, find out if the drain can breathe.
A washing machine doesn't drain, it pumps, and a top-loader pushes up to 17 gallons a minute into a pipe that has to take every bit of it. Ten minutes with a five-gallon bucket tells you whether the line is actually blocked or just can't get air, and those two need opposite repairs.
