## Highland’s hard water. What it means at home.
**Highland reports 14 grains per gallon.** Those dissolved minerals can leave deposits on fixtures and shower glass. Heating the water can also form scale inside a water heater, affecting its efficiency and service life.
### Have a softener, but the spots are back?
We compare the incoming water with water after the softener, then check its bypass, salt supply and regeneration—the cycle that restores its ability to soften. That tells us whether it needs service or whether replacement makes sense.

### Water heater due for service?
Tell us whether it’s a tank or tankless unit and what has changed. We check the heater’s condition and maintenance needs, including mineral buildup. A leaking tank, a failed part and a heater that needs cleaning call for different work.

A different system outside
### Only the sprinklers losing pressure?
Highland’s irrigation water is largely unfiltered surface water. **The city says to check the irrigation filter first** when pressure drops. It also says pressure varies by subdivision; Public Works can help arrange a pressure test.
If the trouble is inside the house, we check the drinking-water supply, shutoffs and pressure regulator. Low sprinkler pressure alone is not a reason to replace the house PRV.

**Never pipe the two supplies together.**
A hose or pipe joining irrigation and drinking water can contaminate the drinking supply. For a suspected connection, Highland lists Public Works at (801) 772-4515.

The plumber behind Mountain Man
## A local family. A hands-on trade.
Tyler’s grandmother is **LaVerne Armitstead Nerdin**. The Armitstead side of his family is part of his connection to north Utah County; his family’s Highland memories include the apple trees.
His grandfather Paul worked at Geneva Steel and Lehi Roller Mills, built homes and fixed children’s bikes. Tyler grew up in Kearns and now lives in Sandy, where Mountain Man’s office is located.
Before starting Mountain Man, Tyler spent nearly a decade in new-construction plumbing, followed by three years in commercial repairs. He is a Utah master plumber who stays hands-on and oversees the company’s jobs.

Highland, before the subdivisions
## Apple trees. Wells. Wooden pipes.
A few pages from Highland’s own historical collection. The water story is every bit as interesting as the orchards.
1919
### An orchard. A 48-foot well.
William and Catherine Mower moved to Highland in 1919. Their 35-acre farm had peach and apple orchards, hay, grain and livestock.
The family history records a **48-foot well**, dug with help from Mr. Turner of American Fork. The farm had its own water source years before Highland built a community drinking-water system.

Before 1946 · Dry Creek
### Spring meant tightening the pipes.
The old canal crossed Dry Creek in two wooden pipes, each four feet across. In his Highland history, Charles Greenland remembers his father and water master Evar Strasburg tightening the U-bolts each spring: winter had dried the wood, and the pipes leaked when water returned.
Concrete replaced the wooden Dry Creek siphons in **1946**.

### 1958–1959 Sixty households helped build the drinking-water system. **+**
Highland Water Company formed in February 1958. By that November, sixty people had joined and the well reached 600 feet. The original plans called for more than 11.5 miles of pipe and a 150,000-gallon reservoir. A December 1959 report recorded most members connected and using the water.

### What does Highland’s hard water mean for my plumbing?
Highland reports 14 grains per gallon. Dissolved minerals can leave deposits on fixtures and form scale when water is heated. If an existing softener is no longer doing its job, we compare untreated and softened water and check the bypass, salt supply and regeneration cycle before recommending repair or replacement.
### Can you add a bathroom or move the kitchen plumbing?
Yes. Tyler’s background includes nearly a decade in new-construction plumbing. We handle the water, drain and vent work for additions and remodels. Highland’s Building Division publishes separate basement-finish and addition/remodel checklists; the permit and inspection requirements depend on the project.
### Is pressurized irrigation the same water that comes from my kitchen tap?
No. Highland’s irrigation and drinking-water supplies are separate. A connection between them can contaminate drinking water. Contact Highland Public Works if you suspect a connection.
### My sprinkler pressure dropped. Do I need a new house pressure regulator?
Low sprinkler pressure alone does not show that the house regulator has failed. Highland advises checking the irrigation filter first. For trouble inside the house, we check the drinking-water supply and its pressure regulator.
### Who should I call for a water emergency?
For a leak or failed fixture in the house, call Mountain Man at (385) 766-8935. Our current call/text hours appear above. For an after-hours city water emergency, Highland lists (801) 420-2553. A city emergency line does not replace a plumbing appointment for repairs inside the home.
### Can I get a second opinion or pay over time?
