Utah’s emissions rule covers natural-gas heaters in mapped air-quality areas. It does not cover electric or propane heaters. The boundary does not simply follow city or ZIP lines.\n\nInstallation address\n\nYour answer\n\n### Enter the water-heater address.\n\nWe’ll check whether the location is inside the saved air-quality boundary.\n\nCheck the model before comparing prices\n\nTwo 50-gallon tanks can have different burners. For a natural-gas heater inside the boundary, check the exact model’s emissions label against the limit for its burner size and use. Compare the full model numbers and burner specifications.\n\n### The existing vent and gas line\n\nThe new heater still has to work with the vent type, gas supply, clearances, and manufacturer’s installation instructions.\n\n### The restraint and surrounding piping\n\nPlan the tank’s restraints, supply connectors, drainage and clearances alongside the heater. The existing connections show what can be reused and what needs changing.\n\n### House pressure and expansion control\n\nIf the relief valve has been dripping, we also check water pressure and thermal expansion. Replacing only the valve may leave the reason it opened untouched.\n\nWhy the installed price changes\n\n## The model is only the first line of the job.\n\nAfter the emissions class, the vent, gas line, restraint, pressure equipment, drain, permit, removal, and warranty still matter.\n\n### The installation address\n\nUse the street address. A city name or ZIP code is not precise enough near the air-quality boundary.\n\n### The exact model\n\nMatch the full model number, emissions class, fuel, input, venting, and warranty.\n\n### Everything included in the installation\n\nAsk whether the price includes venting, restraint, pressure work, connectors, drain work, permit, removal, and disposal.\n\nField note · Utah installation\n\n## The selected heater still needs a complete installation.\n\nSeismic restraints secure the tank to the structure. Venting carries combustion gases outdoors, and pressure-control equipment manages the water supply. These connections belong in the installation plan alongside the selected Ultra-Low NOx model.\n\n\n\nUpper and lower restraints secure this tank. Check the equipment label for its emissions class.\n\n\n\nPressure control, venting, restraint, and piping shape the installed scope after the model is chosen.\n\nDifferent ratings answer different questions\n\n## Clean burning. *Useful hot water.*\n\nCheck emissions compliance and hot-water capacity\n\n| Term | Plain-language meaning | Use it for |\n| --- | --- | --- |\n| NOx | Nitrogen oxides produced during combustion. | Checking the applicable emissions rule and certified equipment. |\n| UEF | Uniform Energy Factor: a standardized energy-performance rating. | Comparing energy use within suitable product categories. |\n| BTU/h input | Fuel energy delivered to the burner per hour. | Comparing the gas demand with the supply available to the heater. |\n| First-hour rating | Hot-water delivery from a fully heated storage heater during its rated first hour. | Comparing storage-heater performance. |\n| GPM at a stated rise | Water heated each minute by a specified number of degrees. | Comparing tankless capacity under the same conditions. |\n\n### The map is the first check.\n\n**Address:** is the property inside the air-quality boundary? **Fuel:** this rule is for natural gas, not electric or propane. **Model:** check the emissions label against the limit for that heater’s burner size and use.\n\n### Does this mean I must replace my working heater?\n\nNo. This rule limits the sale and installation of equipment; being inside the map does not by itself mean your working heater must come out. Heaters made before July 1, 2018 and heaters in recreational vehicles are excluded. Mobile-home heaters have a different emissions limit.
