Journeyman. Master plumber. I spent four years as an apprentice, earned my journeyman license and went on to become a master plumber. Nearly a decade of my career was in new construction. I also served as a foreman on large commercial projects. Then came three years in commercial repairs, including resort work. By the time I founded Mountain Man, I had worked on both the construction and repair sides of the trade, and had been responsible for leading work as well as doing it. Today I run the company, stay involved in the plumbing and take responsibility for what we put our name on. Nearly twenty years ago, I was working toward a future in 3D design. I took college classes while I was still in high school and participated in SkillsUSA for design in college. My peers and counselors expected me to go into tech. So did I. I still remember a career fair where plumbing sat at the very bottom of the career list. The message I took from that, and from the way careers were discussed at school, was that plumbing was where you ended up if the other plans didn’t work out. I chose it anyway. Becoming a master plumber, leading commercial work and starting my own company gave me plenty of reasons to be proud of that decision. I want somebody considering the trades to hear that from a person who was steered toward a different future. My grandparents were Margaret Ann Bushman Russon and Lisle Russon on one side, Paul Nerdin and LaVerne Armitstead Nerdin on the other. Their lives connect my family to Lehi’s farms, classrooms, steel industry and roller mill. That family history matters to me. So does the hometown where I grew up and the community where I’m building Mountain Man today. 1851 ### Twenty acres. A new way to farm. My Bushman ancestors crossed the plains in 1851. Martin and Elizabeth settled in Lehi with their children, including Elias Albert, who was just a year old on the journey. That line comes down to me through my grandmother Margaret. The family account describes a Lehi of about thirty families. Martin traded for twenty acres, and the family learned to farm by irrigation. They hauled building timber from the canyons and took in newly arrived immigrants while they got settled. Water belongs in this family story long before I picked up a pipe wrench. My grandmother Margaret Ann Bushman Russon spent her life in Lehi. She graduated from Lehi High as salutatorian in 1954, earned her elementary education degree at BYU and married my grandfather Lisle Russon. After raising their children, she returned to teaching at Sego Lily Elementary in 1982. Retirement didn’t end that work: she tutored readers at the Lehi Literacy Center and earned national recognition for her service. When I talk about family roots in Lehi, I mean people like her—people who spent their lives there, teaching its kids and helping their neighbors. [Margaret’s family obituary ↗]() NERDIN ### Steel, flour and fixing things. My grandparents Paul Nerdin and LaVerne Armitstead married in 1957. Grandpa spent thirty years at Geneva Steel and also worked at Lehi Roller Mills and Alpine School District. His family obituary remembers the things he made and repaired: children’s bikes, homes, farm projects and woodwork. There were plenty of hands building and fixing things in this family before mine. Lehi is where those older family stories come from. Kearns is where my own started.
