### Street main
The street main carries the neighborhood’s drinking water. A smaller pipe branches from it to supply your property through the meter.
The utility named on your water bill maintains this supply. Call it for water surfacing in the street, a damaged meter or a neighborhood outage.

Where use is measured
### Meter & raised yoke
The meter is mounted on a raised yoke inside the outdoor box. The yoke supports the meter and keeps its connections aligned. Water comes up through the inlet side, passes through the meter and returns down toward the house service.
The dial faces upward beneath the lid. The copper yoke raises the meter above the buried pipe, with a cross-bar holding the legs together. The inlet angle valve controls supply; the outlet fitting turns water back toward the house.

Across the yard
### Buried service line
This pressure pipe carries drinking water from the meter to the house. A leak here can keep using water even with the house shutoff closed. Irrigation or other branches connected before that shutoff also remain supplied.
Depth protects the line from winter freezing. The route, pipe condition and nearby utilities determine where the contractor digs and which replacement method fits.

From soil to basement
### Foundation entry
At the basement wall, the service passes through a protected, sealed opening before turning up to an accessible indoor shutoff. The penetration keeps the pipe clear of concrete contact and closes the path for groundwater around it.
The entry location affects excavation outside and access inside. Tell the contractor about a finished basement, cabinets or equipment covering this area.

Control of the indoor supply
### House shutoff
This valve controls the water continuing into the home. A quarter-turn ball valve uses a lever: parallel to the pipe is open, across the pipe is closed.
Closing this valve stops flow beyond it. The service pipe between the meter and this valve remains under pressure. The illustration shows that boundary with the house valve open or closed.

PRV / Pressure-reducing valve
### Indoor pressure regulator
After the house shutoff, the pressure-reducing valve lowers the incoming pressure for the home’s plumbing. The spring and diaphragm inside adjust the opening as water demand changes.
A technician checks pressure with water off and with fixtures running to evaluate the regulator. This model places the regulator at the basement service entry, where it remains accessible for inspection and replacement.

Repair method / Piercing a new passage
### Bullet / mole boring
Two access pits let the crew work beneath the surface between them. The cutaway shows a tool advancing under a walkway.
1. **Launch pit.** The crew sets the tool’s direction and connects its compressed-air hose.
2. **The mole.** Repeated impacts drive the steel body through the soil. The orange arrow shows its travel direction.
3. **Receiving pit.** The tool emerges here. The service tubing is installed through the passage and connected at the ends.
Repair method / Opening the pipe route
### Open-trench replacement
The crew excavates along the line so the pipe and connections can be reached directly. The front soil face is removed in this view to expose the work.
1. **Open route.** Soil is removed along the planned service line.
2. **Pipe bed.** Prepared material supports the pipe along its length.
3. **New water line.** Connections and testing are completed before the trench is backfilled and the surface rebuilt.

## Where the yard line meets the house.
The indoor shutoff and pressure regulator sit at the service entry. On this job, we replaced the old gate valve and regulator with a lever-operated ball valve, a new regulator and a pressure gauge.

## Who takes care of which pipe?
The water utility generally looks after the street supply and meter. The pipe leaving the meter toward your house is usually yours to maintain.
That buried line supplies the whole house. When it leaks, the homeowner hires the contractor and pays for the repair and yard restoration.

The utility maintains the street main, its connection to the property and the meter. It also handles shutting off that supply for a service-line repair.

Frost protection starts with cover
## How deep is the line?
Keep the line at least 12 inches below the expected frost line. The frost line is how deep winter freezing can reach; that extra foot keeps the water pipe beneath it.

For example, a 36-inch frost depth plus 12 inches puts the top of the pipe 48 inches below the finished yard. A deeper utility minimum sets the depth where one applies.

Frost depth changes with location and elevation. The line’s depth follows the colder ground and the water provider’s minimum.
### Measure from the finished yard
Cover is the soil between the top of the pipe and the finished yard. Lowering the yard removes some of that protection, so grading and pipe depth are planned together.
### Follow the depth all the way in
The buried run stays protected through the yard and into the basement wall. The meter sits higher on its yoke inside the covered box; the service connections return down to the buried line.

### Finding a leak
Before the yard opens
## Start with what changed.
Bring the water-use alert, photos of the wet area and any history of earlier repairs. Those details help the contractor choose the next check.
### A wet strip, bubbling ground or settling soil
Note where the water appears, when it started and whether it changes with irrigation or rainfall. A locating contractor combines the pipe route with isolation tests and leak-detection equipment to choose where to expose the line. Escaping water can travel through soil before reaching the surface.
### A water-use alert or a higher bill
Review the dates and hourly use if your provider offers a customer portal. Toilets, irrigation, an automatic fill valve and a softener cycle can all consume water while the faucets are off. A continuous-use pattern helps focus the investigation.
### Weak flow throughout the house
A technician compares pressure at rest with pressure while water is running, then checks accessible valves and the pressure regulator. A small or restricted service line shows its limits most clearly when several fixtures run together.
### Water is entering the basement now
Keep clear of standing water near electrical equipment. Close an accessible house shutoff if the leak is in the indoor plumbing and you can reach it safely. For a buried line leaking before that valve, call the water provider for supply shutoff assistance and arrange the underground repair.
### What a meter check tells you
With planned water use paused, movement at the meter means water is still passing through it. A technician can compare that reading with the house valve open and closed, accounting for irrigation branches and any valve that fails to close completely.

### Find your water provider
The utility on your water bill can help with meter problems, supply shutdowns and records of the original pipe material. Those records are especially useful in an older home with an unknown service line.

### Repair methods
Choose the scope
## Repair the failure. Or replace the run.
The decision comes down to pipe condition, the location of the failure and the cost of reaching it. A quote should explain why the proposed approach fits this property.

### Spot repair
Excavate the failure and replace a short section or connection.
A localized break in otherwise sound pipe can be a good repair candidate. Exposing it also lets the contractor examine the adjoining pipe. Repeated leaks or widespread deterioration make a full replacement worth pricing.
**Ask the contractor:** What failed, what condition is the remaining pipe in, and how much of it stays?

### Open trench
Open the route and lay the new service in an excavated trench.
This gives direct access for changing the route, preparing the pipe bed and making connections. Excavation, soil handling, compacted backfill and rebuilding the surface account for much of the work. Access for equipment and protection of the excavation belong in the plan.
**Ask the contractor:** How wide is the disturbed area, where does the excavated soil go, and who restores the surface?

### Bullet / mole boring
A compressed-air piercing tool makes a passage through the soil between access pits.
The “bullet” repeatedly hammers forward, displacing soil around its steel body. It is aimed from a launch pit toward a receiving pit; service tubing is then installed through the passage. It can be useful beneath a lawn, sidewalk or driveway. Alignment, compacted soil, cobbles and utility crossings determine whether that route suits a mole.
**Ask the contractor:** Where are both pits, how will the bore be tracked, and what is the plan for rocks or a blocked path?

### Pulling / splitting / bursting
Use the existing service route to draw in a replacement pipe.
The equipment depends on the old pipe. Some systems pull it out; others slit it or break it apart with an expanding head while drawing new pipe behind. For example, HammerHead’s HydraSlitter cuts a lead service along its length. Couplings, bends and nearby utilities affect the method and the access needed.

### Directional drilling
A guided drill creates a new underground path, followed by pipe installation.
The operator tracks the drill head and adjusts its direction along the planned route. This can help with longer runs or routes that need more control. The plan includes equipment access, entry and exit areas, drilling fluid management and verified utility crossings.
**Ask the contractor:** Why does this route call for a guided drill, and what space does the equipment need?

### Specify the new pipe
Copper and approved plastic water-service tubing are options a contractor may consider. The quote should name the exact material, diameter, pressure rating and connection system. Copper Types K and L have different wall thicknesses; plastic tubing has its own product standards and pressure classes.

### Size it for the house
The required flow, service length, elevation change, meter and available pressure all affect pipe sizing. Show the contractor any planned bathroom addition or irrigation changes while the replacement is being designed.
Also identify electrical grounding or bonding connections to a metal service pipe so the replacement plan includes the electrical work affected by a material change.
From the first visit to the finished yard
## What the project involves.
The pipe is only part of the work. Access, the water outage, testing and restoring the yard belong in the plan from the start.
1. ### Locate and plan
Identify the supply route, ownership boundary and failure. Confirm the water provider's requirements, permits, utility markings and any private-line locating. Agree on access, water shutoff and the restoration scope.
2. ### Expose and replace
Protect the work area, coordinate the water shutdown and reach the pipe using the selected method. Install the specified drinking-water pipe, approved connections and protection at the building entry.
3. ### Test and restore water
Complete the required inspection and testing while the work is accessible. Flush and disinfect as required by the water provider, then check the indoor fixtures after water is restored.
4. ### Backfill and finish
Support and cover the pipe with the specified material, compact the backfill and restore the agreed surfaces. Save the route photos, pipe specification, inspection record, invoice and warranty with the house records.
### 811 marks and private pipes
Blue Stakes of Utah coordinates markings for participating utility owners. Private water lines, irrigation, sewer laterals and wiring to outbuildings may need a private locator. The excavator must account for both before starting.

### Who owns the pipe between the meter and the house?
The homeowner generally maintains the pipe from the meter to the house. The utility looks after the street supply and meter. A leak at the meter box is worth checking with the utility before arranging the repair.

### Will closing the valve inside stop a leak in the yard?
The indoor shutoff controls the plumbing beyond that valve. A leak on the supply side continues to receive water. Your water provider can help with an upstream shutoff when the buried service needs repair.
