Toilets](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/?agentnet=md>) Sandy, Utah · Salt Lake Valley\n\nToilet repair & installation\n\n# Toilet repair. Every part explained.\n\nA toilet should flush cleanly, refill quietly and sit solidly on the floor. When one of those changes, the right repair starts with finding the failed part. Here’s the whole system, from the water entering the tank to the seal beneath your feet.\n\n[Call / text (385) 766-8935](<tel:13857668935>)\n\n![Newly secured toilet flange on a tile floor during our Holladay repair](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/secured-toilet-flange-installation-holladay.webp>)\n\nOur work / Holladay **The repair starts beneath the bowl.**[See the flange repair →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/past-work-toilet-flange-repair-holladay/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Toilet repair hub](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Running toilet repair](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/running-toilet-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Flange & wax ring repair](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/toilet-flange-wax-ring-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Bidet seat installation](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/bidet-seat-installation/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Toilet replacement & installation](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/toilet-replacement-installation/?agentnet=md>)\n\nWhat brings you here?\n\n- [It keeps running →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#tr-flush>)\n\n- [Weak flush or clog →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#tr-clogs>)\n\n- [Leak or loose base →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#tr-field>)\n\n- [Repair or replace? →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#tr-repair>)\n\nInside the toilet / explore in 3D\n\n## Every part has a job.\n\nOpen the tank, follow a flush, then lift the toilet to see its floor seal. Switch on the bidet seat to explore the water connection and wash wand.\n\nKohler Cimarron / elongated\n\nFollow a flush\n\nReady. The tank is full and the bowl holds its standing water seal.\n\nInside the tank\n\n### Find which water path stays open.\n\nThe fill valve admits fresh water. The flush valve holds that water in the tank until you press the handle. A running toilet can waste water through either path. Watch where the water goes after the tank fills.\n\n**Water keeps spilling into the overflow**\n\nThe fill valve is still admitting water. Check its float movement and the marked tank level; service or replace a valve that will not shut off.\n\n**The tank gets quiet, then refills again**\n\nWater is escaping between flushes. Check the flapper or canister seal and its seating surface. A tight or snagged chain can hold an otherwise good seal open.\n\n**A jiggle of the handle stops it**\n\nLook at the lever and chain before replacing the fill valve. The linkage must lift the flush valve and then let it settle fully closed.\n\n [Find and repair the failed tank part →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/running-toilet-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\nRead more: [Kohler toilet service-parts guide ↗](<https://resources.kohler.com/webassets/kpna/brochures/Toilet_ServiceParts_Brochure_FINAL.pdf>)\n\nBowl and drain\n\n### Follow what happens to the bowl.\n\nA weak flush can start with too little water leaving the tank or with trouble getting water out of the bowl. Watch the water level during the flush and check whether nearby drains react.\n\n**Bowl already high?** Stop flushing. If other drains are backing up, stop water use in the home.\n\n**The bowl rises, then drains slowly**\n\nA restriction is holding up discharge. A toilet auger reaches into the curved porcelain passage. A lodged toy or other solid object sometimes means lifting the toilet to remove it.\n\n**The flush has little wash or momentum**\n\nCheck the tank water level, flush-valve lift and bowl refill. Mineral deposits in the wash passages can also reduce performance.\n\n**The shower backs up when the toilet flushes**\n\nThat points toward a shared drain restriction. Clearing the toilet alone may leave the downstream blockage in place. Recurring trouble can call for a camera inspection.\n\n [Understand shared-drain problems →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/sewer-underground/?agentnet=md>)\n\nRead more: [Kohler toilet service-parts guide ↗](<https://resources.kohler.com/webassets/kpna/brochures/Toilet_ServiceParts_Brochure_FINAL.pdf>) · [Salt Lake City: what not to flush ↗](<https://www.slc.gov/utilities/wastewaterpretreatment/what-not-to-flush/>)\n\nBelow the bowl / real Holladay repair\n\n### The seal needs a solid connection.\n\nThe wax ring seals the toilet outlet to the drain. The flange holds the mounting bolts, and the floor supports the bowl. A lasting repair checks all three, especially when the toilet rocks.\n\n- [![Damaged mounting ring in our Holladay toilet repair](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/old-toilet-flange-damage-holladay.png>) Before](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/past-work-toilet-flange-repair-holladay/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [![Secured mounting ring after our Holladay toilet repair](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/secured-toilet-flange-installation-holladay.webp>) After](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/past-work-toilet-flange-repair-holladay/?agentnet=md>)\n\n**Find the first wet point**\n\nA supply connector or tank gasket can drip down the porcelain. Water first appearing at the base during a flush brings the floor seal and flange into the inspection.\n\n**Lift the bowl and inspect the flange**\n\nBroken bolt slots may need a secured repair ring. A cracked flange body or failed drain joint needs a different repair. New flooring can also leave the flange too low.\n\n**Support it, seal it, test it**\n\nDry-fit and support the bowl, install a fresh seal and secure it evenly. Test repeated flushes and the supply connection. Tightening harder can crack porcelain without fixing the support.\n\n [See flange, wax-ring and floor repairs →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/toilet-flange-wax-ring-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\nRead more: [Oatey: installing a toilet flange ↗](<https://www.oatey.com/resources/project-guides/install-toilet-flange>) · [Oatey: repairing a toilet flange ↗](<https://www.oatey.com/resources/project-guides/how-repair-toilet-flange>) · [Kohler toilet installation instructions ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/1476134-2.pdf>)\n\nKeep the fixture or change the fit\n\n### Let the failed part decide the work.\n\nAn intact toilet with a worn valve or seal is often worth repairing. Replacement earns its place when the porcelain is damaged, essential parts are unavailable or the toilet no longer fits the household.\n\n**Worn tank fittings**\n\nMatch the flapper, canister seal or fill valve to the toilet. Several deteriorated parts can make a matched tank rebuild more practical than separate repairs.\n\n**A leaking or rocking base**\n\nInspect the floor connection before buying a new toilet. A new bowl still needs a sound flange, stable support and the right seal.\n\n**Cracks, poor performance or an awkward fit**\n\nCracked porcelain calls for replacement of the affected fixture. Once the drain is clear, repeated poor flushing, uncomfortable height or an unsuitable bowl shape can also make replacement worthwhile.\n\n [Choose and plan a replacement →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/toilet-replacement-installation/?agentnet=md>)\n\nRead more: [Kohler Cimarron K-31648 dimensions ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/K-31648_spec_US-CA_Kohler_en.pdf>) · [Kohler toilet installation instructions ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/1476134-2.pdf>)\n\nClean supply water / wash seat\n\n### A wash seat adds three connections.\n\nThe seat mounts to the bowl, takes clean water from the supply tee and uses electrical power for its heated wash and other features.\n\n**The seat has to fit**\n\nCheck bowl shape, mounting access and clearance at the tank. The bidet guide links the manufacturer's compatibility chart.\n\n**The tee supplies clean water**\n\nThe supplied tee divides water between the tank inlet and seat hose. Its gaskets seal the joints; the wash water then falls into the bowl.\n\n**Power and routine care**\n\nThis seat uses a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit. Clean its wand and inlet filter as its manual describes.\n\n[Plan and maintain a bidet seat →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/bidet-seat-installation/?agentnet=md>)\n\nRead more: [Kohler bidet-seat compatibility chart ↗](<https://www.kohler.com/content/dam/kohler-com-NA/Lifestyle/PDP-PDF/bidet-toilet-seat-f-and-b-compatibility-guide-24-3301-0924.pdf>) · [Kohler bidet-seat installation ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/1233549-2.pdf>) · [Kohler bidet-seat operation and cleaning ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/1441872-5.pdf>)\n\nWhole toilet\n\n### A flush from supply to drain.\n\nThe shutoff and supply hose bring in clean water. Tank valves control the flush and refill. The bowl’s built-in trapway leads to the sealed floor connection.\n\n#### What to look for\n\nChoose a part to see what it does and how it relates to a repair.\n\n### Model reference & parts index\n\nThe porcelain toilet and bidet-seat exteriors use Kohler’s K-31648 and K-8298 CAD geometry in inches. The toilet has a 12-inch rough-in and a 16½-inch bowl rim. We built the working tank parts, supply connection and floor assembly for this teaching model. The bowl view traces the water route; colored water makes its movement visible. The flush cycle is shortened for the demonstration.\n\n[Toilet drawing ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/K-31648_spec_US-CA_Kohler_en.pdf>) · [Bidet-seat drawing ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/K-8298_spec_US-CA_Kohler_en.pdf>) · [Bidet operation ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/1441872-5.pdf>)\n\n**The whole toilet**\n\nThe shutoff and supply hose bring in clean water. The tank releases and replaces its stored water. The bowl’s built-in trapway leads to the sealed floor connection.\n\n**Fill valve & cup float**\n\nThe fill valve admits water after a flush. Its float rises with the water and shuts the inlet at the set level. The narrow refill tube also sends water to replenish the bowl.\n\n**Canister flush valve**\n\nThe handle and chain lift this cylinder. Water enters the open outlet around its bottom edge and flows into the bowl. It drops back onto its seal as the tank empties.\n\n**Flush-valve seal**\n\nThis replaceable ring seals the canister against the flush-valve base. It holds the tank’s water between flushes.\n\n**Overflow & bowl-refill tube**\n\nThe center overflow gives excess tank water a route into the bowl. The small refill tube delivers the water that rebuilds the bowl’s standing water seal after a flush.\n\n**Trip lever & chain**\n\nThe outside handle turns an arm inside the tank. A short chain transfers that movement to the canister.\n\n**Tank gasket & tank bolts**\n\nOn this two-piece toilet, the large gasket seals the tank outlet to the bowl. Separate bolt gaskets seal the tank mounting holes.\n\n**Bowl & standing water**\n\nThe glazed bowl receives the waste. Water stays in its bottom and the curved trapway between flushes, forming a barrier to sewer gas.\n\n**Built-in trapway**\n\nThe curved passage is molded into the porcelain. A flush fills it and starts a siphon that carries the bowl contents to the floor outlet. Air then breaks the siphon, and refill restores the water seal.\n\n**Bowl wash passages**\n\nWater from the tank feeds the bowl’s wash passage and lower jet. Together they rinse the bowl and get the water moving into the trapway.\n\n**Closet flange**\n\nThe flange joins the toilet to the drain and holds the closet bolts. Its base mounts on the finished floor in this new-installation example and fastens into the structure below.\n\n**Wax seal**\n\nWax compresses around the toilet’s outlet when the bowl is lowered onto the flange. It seals wastewater and sewer gas at that joint.\n\n**Closet bolts & supports**\n\nBolts lock into the flange slots and hold the bowl down. The base bears on the floor; shims support uneven contact points.\n\n**Floor connection & drain**\n\nThe toilet outlet drops through the flange into the drain below. The built-in porcelain trap supplies the fixture’s water seal.\n\n**Toilet shutoff & supply hose**\n\nThe local valve isolates the toilet. A flexible connector carries cold drinking water up to the fill-valve inlet beneath the tank.\n\n**Bidet seat**\n\nThis elongated PureWash seat mounts to the toilet’s seat holes. It receives clean supply water and electrical power for washing and other features.\n\n**Retracting wash wand**\n\nThe wand extends from the seat housing and directs a wash stream upward. Stopping the wash ends the stream and retracts the wand.\n\n**Bidet supply tee**\n\nA gasketed tee at the tank inlet divides the clean-water supply between the toilet fill valve and bidet seat. The seat hose runs from its side outlet.\n\n**GFCI-protected power**\n\nThe electric seat plugs into a grounded outlet with ground-fault protection. The GFCI interrupts power if it detects an electrical imbalance.\n\nFull repair guides\n\n- [Running toilet repair ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/running-toilet-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Flange & wax ring repair ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/toilet-flange-wax-ring-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Bidet seat installation ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/bidet-seat-installation/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Toilet replacement & installation ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/toilet-replacement-installation/?agentnet=md>)\n\n### Everyday care: quiet leaks, cleaners and what goes down the drain\n\n**Catch a quiet leak.** Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing. Color reaching the bowl shows water escaping through the tank outlet. Flush afterward to avoid staining.\n\n**Protect the working parts.** In-tank chlorine tablets can damage seals and fittings. Use a cleaner the toilet maker permits.\n\n**Keep wipes out.** Put wipes, paper towels, hygiene products and litter in the trash. Toilet paper and body waste belong in the toilet.\n\nRead more: [EPA WaterSense: checking toilet leaks ↗](<https://www.epa.gov/watersense/fix-leak-week>) · [Kohler toilet installation instructions ↗](<https://techcomm.kohler.com/techcomm/pdf/1476134-2.pdf>) · [Salt Lake City: what not to flush ↗](<https://www.slc.gov/utilities/wastewaterpretreatment/what-not-to-flush/>)\n\nGood questions\n\n## Toilet repair, explained.\n\n### Why does my toilet turn on for a few seconds when nobody used it?\n\nA small tank-to-bowl leak lowers the tank level until the fill valve switches on. A worn flapper or canister seal is a common cause. A dye test helps reveal the leak; the handle and chain also need to let the seal close fully.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#answer-why-does-my-toilet-turn-on-for-a-few-seconds-when-nobody-used-it>)\n\n### Can a toilet leak underneath without obvious water on the tile?\n\nYes. A failing floor seal can let water reach the floor opening or subfloor. Staining below, odor and a moving bowl are reasons to inspect the connection.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#answer-can-a-toilet-leak-underneath-without-obvious-water-on-the-tile>)\n\n### Why does the bowl stay low after a flush?\n\nThe refill tube may be disconnected, obstructed or incorrectly positioned. The fill valve sends part of its water through that tube to restore the bowl level. The tube must be connected as the toilet and fill-valve instructions show.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#answer-why-does-the-bowl-stay-low-after-a-flush>)\n\n### Does a bidet seat use water from the toilet bowl?\n\nIt receives clean water from the household supply through a tee connection. The bowl catches the used wash water.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/toilet-repair/#answer-does-a-bidet-seat-use-water-from-the-toilet-bowl>)\n\n### Do you handle toilet replacement as well as repair?\n\nYes.
