First establish where that connection sits in the piping: some outside taps branch off before the house regulator. That reading describes the utility side rather than the pressure reaching your fixtures.\n\nUse a gauge rated for the expected pressure, with an intact sealing washer. Attach it with the tap closed, then open the tap slowly. Keep the connection accessible and watch for leakage. A plumber can use permanent test ports to compare the inlet and outlet directly.\n\nRead more: [Watts: LF25AUB installation, adjustment & troubleshooting ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/11894-source/639119464660000000/1910200-pdf.pdf>)\n\n02 / Pressure testing guide\n\n## All taps off: pressure at rest\n\nTurn off the fixtures and wait for toilets, ice makers and other water-using equipment to finish filling. The settled gauge reading is static pressure—the pressure sitting in the pipe when water is not moving.\n\nWrite down the reading and time. A maximum-reading pointer can catch a higher pressure later, including overnight when neighborhood demand is lower. A peak tells you that pressure changed; the next step is finding when and why it happened.\n\nRead more: [Caleffi: plumbing pressure & elevation ↗](<https://www.caleffi.com/en-us/blog/2-plumbing-system-pressure-concepts>)\n\n03 / Pressure testing guide\n\n## Open another tap: pressure during use\n\nLeave the gauge connected and open another cold-water fixture. Some drop is expected as water moves through the service, regulator and house piping. Record the reading and which fixtures are running. For a useful comparison, repeat with the same fixtures.\n\nIf the outlet pressure falls sharply while the inlet stays steady, check the regulator and its screen. If both sides fall, work back toward the supply. If pressure stays healthy near the regulator but distant fixtures fade, inspect filters, softeners, partly closed shutoffs and restricted house piping.\n\nOne weak faucet usually sends the investigation to its aerator, cartridge, supply connector and local shutoff. Several rooms losing flow together points toward something they share.\n\nRead more: [Watts: LF25AUB installation, adjustment & troubleshooting ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/11894-source/639119464660000000/1910200-pdf.pdf>) · [Denver Water: finding restricted flow in a home ↗](<https://www.denverwater.org/residential/services-and-information/troubleshooting-and-repairs/low-water-pressure>)\n\n04 / Pressure testing guide\n\n## Pressure rises while nobody uses water\n\nA regulator should close its water passage once the downstream pressure reaches its setting. Grit or wear at that seat can let water slip through. The house pressure then slowly approaches the higher inlet pressure. Plumbers call this pressure creep.\n\nHeating water creates another pattern. The water expands; in a closed system it needs somewhere to go. An absent, waterlogged, undersized or incorrectly charged expansion tank can let pressure rise during the water heater's recovery cycle.\n\nCompare readings with heater activity and check the regulator and expansion tank together. Opening a tap can bring either kind of pressure rise down, so that observation by itself does not identify the failed part.\n\nRead more: [Watts: LF25AUB installation, adjustment & troubleshooting ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/11894-source/639119464660000000/1910200-pdf.pdf>) · [Watts: thermal expansion in a closed system ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/18042-source/pg-thermexpansion>)\n\n05 / Pressure testing guide\n\n## Bring the useful clues\n\nTell us the reading at rest, the reading during use, the highest recorded pressure and where the gauge was connected. A photo of the regulator and nearby shutoff helps identify the assembly. Note whether the trouble affects one fixture, the whole house or only the hot water.\n\nFor sudden loss of water across the property, check for a utility outage. If water is actively escaping in the house, use a working main shutoff and arrange the repair.\n\n## See the parts at work.\n\n[Explore both regulators in 3D →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/pressure-prv/#pv-lab>)\n\nQuestions from the house\n\n## Water pressure, explained.\n\n### Does a stronger shower mean my pressure is too high?\n\nThe showerhead, its flow restriction and the condition of the valve all affect how a shower feels. Use a gauge to establish the pressure.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/pressure-prv/water-pressure-testing/#answer-does-a-stronger-shower-mean-my-pressure-is-too-high>)\n\n### Should pressure drop when I open a faucet?\n\nYes, flowing water loses pressure through piping and equipment. The size of the drop, the amount of water being used and the location of the reading help show whether the system is performing well.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/pressure-prv/water-pressure-testing/#answer-should-pressure-drop-when-i-open-a-faucet>)\n\n### Can I leave a pressure gauge connected overnight?\n\nA gauge designed for that use can record a peak while connected at a suitable protected test point. Check the connection for leaks and keep it away from freezing conditions. Have a plumber set up monitoring if the location or pressure is uncertain.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/pressure-prv/water-pressure-testing/#answer-can-i-leave-a-pressure-gauge-connected-overnight>)\n\nMountain Man Plumbing / Salt Lake Valley\n\n## Get your water under control.\n\n[Call (385) 766-8935](<tel:13857668935>)\n\n- [Main water shutoffs →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/shutoff-valves/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Water heaters & expansion →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/water-heater-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Restricted old piping →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/whole-home-repipe/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [The line from the meter →](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/water-service-line/?agentnet=md>)\n\n### Sources & public guide record\n\n[Guide data (JSON)](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/pb/facts/pressure-guide/guide.json>) · [Read as plain text](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/pressure-prv/water-pressure-testing/?agentnet=md&agentnet_display=html>)\n\n- [Watts: LF25AUB installation, adjustment & troubleshooting ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/11894-source/639119464660000000/1910200-pdf.pdf>)\n- [Watts: LF25AUB pressure range & flow data ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/20383-source/es-lf25aub-pdf.pdf>)\n- [Cla-Val: 90-01 pilot-operated valve & circuit ↗](<https://www.cla-val.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/E-90-01.pdf>)\n- [Caleffi: plumbing pressure & elevation ↗](<https://www.caleffi.com/en-us/blog/2-plumbing-system-pressure-concepts>)\n- [Watts: thermal expansion in a closed system ↗](<https://www.watts.com/dfsmedia/0533dbba17714b1ab581ab07a4cbb521/18042-source/pg-thermexpansion>)\n- [ICC: residential water-pressure requirements, P2903.3.1 ↗](<https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/IRC2021P3/chapter-29-water-supply-and-distribution>)\n- [Utah: adopted construction codes ↗](<https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title15A/Chapter2/C15A-2-P1_1800010118000101.pdf>)\n- [Sandy City: water system & pressure zones ↗](<https://www.utah.gov/pmn/files/898561.pdf>)\n- [Denver Water: finding restricted flow in a home ↗](<https://www.denverwater.org/residential/services-and-information/troubleshooting-and-repairs/low-water-pressure>)\n- [Oklahoma State University: residential pressure range ↗](<https://extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/managing-pressure-in-the-home-irrigation-system>)\n\nConnected in your home\n\n## Keep following the plumbing.\n\n- [01 **Water pressure & PRVs →** Connect the readings with the regulator and the incoming supply.](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/pressure-prv/?agentnet=md>)\n- [02 **Whole-home repiping →** Old restricted piping can reduce flow even when resting pressure looks normal.](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/services/whole-home-repipe/?agentnet=md>)\n- [03 **Water heater repair & learning hub →** Check the hot-water side when pressure rises during a heating cycle.](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/water-heater-repair/?agentnet=md>)",
