I wrote a Reddit post after tuning into a Utah Construction Licensing Board meeting where they discussed mental health struggles and suicide rates in the construction industry. What I heard matched my own experience almost exactly.\n\nSo I said something.\n\nThat post started circulating. It picked up traction. Not long after, it was referenced in a local KUTV news segment covering the same issue.\n\n[Read the Full KUTV News Feature: Suicide and Mental Health in Construction →](<https://kutv.com/news/local/suicide-mental-health-struggles-reach-alarming-levels-within-construction-industry>)\n\nI am proud of that. Not because my name showed up on the news, but because a conversation that had lived quietly inside job trailers and job sites finally made it into the open. That moment was my gateway into advocacy.\n\n## WHY I SPOKE UP\n\nI spent close to ten years working in large scale multi family plumbing construction in Utah. I worked my way up to foreman. I carried crews, schedules, and responsibility. From the outside it looked like a solid career. From the inside it was constant pressure.\n\nContractors fighting subcontractors. Owners delaying or withholding payment. Engineers clashing with builders. Foremen given impossible deadlines with no authority to fix the underlying problems. Margins were tight, so the stress rolled downhill. Every day felt adversarial. You did not walk onto a job site focused on craftsmanship. You walked in preparing for conflict. That environment wears people down.\n\n\"Trades should be demanding. They should not be destructive.\"\n\n## WHEN PRIVATE STRUGGLES BECOME PUBLIC\n\nThe KUTV report did not exaggerate anything. Construction has one of the highest suicide rates of any occupation in the country. The numbers are real and the stories behind them are real too. What stood out to me was not the statistics. It was how familiar every story sounded.\n\nLong hours. Mandatory weekends. Little separation between work and personal life. Isolation on job sites. Constant pressure to keep moving no matter what was breaking underneath you. Toward the end of my time in construction, weekends were no longer optional. If a project slipped, the answer was not fixing the system. The answer was giving more of yourself. That is not sustainable. And for a lot of people it becomes dangerous.\n\n## WHY LEAVING CONSTRUCTION CHANGED MY LIFE\n\nEventually I walked away from large scale construction and started Mountain Man Plumbing, shifting into residential service work. The difference was immediate.\n\nInstead of constant conflict I found homeowners and small business owners who were appreciative and human. People who wanted problems solved, not battles fought. Accountability was clear. Responsibility was direct. The work did not get easier. It got healthier.\n\nThat contrast is what made the licensing board meeting hit so hard. I had lived both sides. I knew exactly why the numbers looked the way they did.\n\n## WHY THIS MATTERS TO HOMEOWNERS\n\nMental health in construction does not stay inside the industry. Systems that grind people down do not produce careful thoughtful work. They produce burnout. They produce shortcuts. They produce decisions made under pressure instead of judgment. Homeowners usually see the result long after the cause. Rushed diagnoses. Unnecessary replacements. Work that fails quietly months or years later.\n\n## WHY I STEPPED INTO ADVOCACY\n\nSeeing that Reddit post referenced publicly made something clear to me. Homeowners do not get honest insight into how the trades actually function unless someone inside speaks up. Advocacy is not about attacking companies or workers. It is about transparency. It is about explaining systems most people never see until something goes wrong.\n\n## FINAL THOUGHT\n\nI am proud that the conversation reached the news. Not because of recognition, but because it meant the issue could not be ignored anymore. If speaking honestly about my experience helps push the industry toward healthier systems, clearer accountability, and more informed homeowners, then this is work worth doing.\n\nMountain Man Plumbing // Foreman’s Journal: 2025 // Sandy, UT\n\nBack to The Advocacy Files\n\n[Source page](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/consumer-advocacy/>)\n\n![Tyler Nerdin](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Tyler-Nerdin.png>)\n\nConsumer Advocacy Series\n\n### By Tyler Nerdin\n\nFounder & Author \\| Master Plumber \\#8522119-5518\n\n[About the Author](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/tyler-nerdin/?agentnet=md>)",
