From our county property-data analysis
## Kearns was built in big waves.
We found **3,537 residential properties built in the 1950s** and another **2,673 from the 1970s** inside today’s Kearns boundary. Those two decades account for almost two-thirds of the records we reviewed.
That’s why older-home repairs belong front and center here. We repair the shower valves, drains and supply piping already in the house, and install new plumbing when you’re ready to change the kitchen, finish a bathroom or replace a water heater.

### Our data, boundaries & counting method
Mountain Man analysis, September 10, 2026: Salt Lake County’s 2025 assessment records joined to county primary address points inside the official Kearns municipal boundary. One record per residential parcel with housing units and a valid construction year; one invalid year excluded. These are property records, not household counts. A home’s construction year does not date later plumbing replacements.

Kearns Improvement District · Since 1957
## Our own district. A boundary worth knowing.
**Kearns Improvement District—KID—provides both drinking water and sewer service.** It covers most of Kearns and extends into neighboring cities. A portion of Kearns is served by Taylorsville-Bennion Improvement District.
Our map-data comparison places **8,414** of the residential records in KID’s service area and **1,244** in Taylorsville-Bennion’s. Your water bill identifies which district to call; a Kearns mailing address alone doesn’t settle it.
KID’s 24-hour emergency line (801) 968-1011 For district water or sewer problems. For plumbing inside your home, call Mountain Man at (385) 766-8935.

### How we made this map
County municipal boundaries and Utah culinary-service-area polygons for reporting year 2024, overlaid with the same 9,658 residential records. Every sampled point matched one of these two districts. Boundaries are simplified for display; this is an overview, not an address-level service determination.

A useful tool already on your water account
## KID can flag the use. We can fix the plumbing.
KID offers free AMI meter access with water-use monitoring and high-use or leak notifications. If you receive an alert, save the time and usage shown. That information gives us a starting point when tracking down the household leak.
The district also asks customers to call it first about a suspected water or sewer lateral problem. KID can help diagnose it, but says it does not repair those privately maintained lines.

The infrastructure
came first **1942** Camp Kearns
The town beneath the town
## Before the houses, there was a 16-inch main.
The Army brought water across the valley from Salt Lake City through a **16-inch main** to supply Camp Kearns. It built the distribution pipes, sewers and a sewage treatment plant for a military population that reached about 50,000.
After the war, the land and utilities passed into private hands with a condition: they had to be available for a civilian town site. The water and sewer businesses eventually merged, and the new Kearns Improvement District bought the system in 1957.
There was a fight for the town’s future, too. Reporting based on Air Force records describes veterans protesting a proposal to return the camp to farmland. Returning GIs needed homes. The military utility network helped make those neighborhoods possible.

2000–2001 · Utah Olympic Oval
## Before the gold medals, the floor had to go.
As the Olympic Oval neared completion, crews found a problem underneath the skating surface. Contemporary reporting described some of its **37 miles of refrigeration pipe floating out of position during the concrete pour**. The concrete had to be torn out and replaced.
February 2001 reporting on the pipe problem ↗
The *Deseret News* followed the rebuild: the replacement slab spent much of January and early February 2001 curing as the March world championships approached. Kearns’s future Olympic venue had to get the hidden work right before skaters could use the surface.

### Is Mountain Man’s plumber really from Kearns?
Yes. Kearns is Tyler Nerdin’s hometown, and he graduated from Kearns High. He is the master plumber and founder behind Mountain Man Plumbing.
### Can you repair the plumbing in an older Kearns home?
Yes. We repair existing pipes, shower valves, faucets, toilets and drains, and replace water heaters and shutoffs. For a kitchen or bathroom remodel, we also install new water, drain and vent piping. We inspect the existing plumbing before recommending a repair or replacement.
### Who handles plumbing permits in Kearns?
The Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District handles Kearns building permits and inspections. Its published guidance lists water-heater replacements, basement finishes and changes to plumbing among projects requiring permits, while equivalent replacement of defective fixtures may be exempt. We check the requirements for your job.
### Does every Kearns home get water from KID?
No. Kearns Improvement District serves most of the city, but part is in Taylorsville-Bennion Improvement District. Check the utility name on your water bill. Our map shows the distinction; it is not an address-specific service lookup.
### KID sent me a leak alert. Can you help?
Yes. Keep the alert and the time or usage it shows, then call us about the household plumbing. For a suspected water or sewer lateral problem, KID asks customers to call the district first for diagnostic help. Its published guidance says it does not repair those lines.
### Who should I call about water in the street or a sewer-main problem?
If KID is your provider, its 24-hour emergency number is (801) 968-1011. Call your listed utility if another district serves you. For a household plumbing leak, call Mountain Man at (385) 766-8935 and close a working fixture shutoff or house main if safely accessible.
### Can I get another quote reviewed or finance the repair?
Yes. Our second-opinion tool lets you send an existing plumbing quote for review. Wisetack payment options are available for eligible work, subject to credit approval and varying terms. We agree on the work and price before starting.
