Open the interactive lessons ↓](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#gas-learning-lab>)\n\n### Gas words, in plain English No trade vocabulary needed.\n\n**Demand / load**\n\nHow much gas the equipment needs. An appliance label gives its fuel input in BTU per hour; add the relevant appliances when assessing a shared pipe.\n\n**BTU/h / input rating**\n\nBritish thermal units per hour: the rate of fuel energy going into an appliance. Heat output is what it delivers after losses, so use the **input** rating for gas-supply calculations.\n\n**Flow / CFH**\n\nHow much gas passes a point over time. CFH means cubic feet per hour. A cubic foot is a volume, like a box one foot on each side.\n\n**Pressure / pressure drop**\n\nPressure is the push on the gas. A pressure difference moves it along a pipe. The reduction in pressure along the route while gas flows is called pressure drop.\n\n**Capacity**\n\nHow much gas a pipe, meter or other part can deliver at the specified pressure. The connected appliances determine how much capacity is needed.\n\n**Branch / upstream / downstream**\n\nA branch takes gas from a shared route to part of the system. Upstream means toward the supply; downstream means in the direction gas travels toward the appliances.\n\n**Meter / regulator**\n\nThe meter measures gas use. A regulator controls pressure.\n\n**Shutoff / sediment trap**\n\nA shutoff is a valve that stops supply to a section. A sediment trap is a capped pocket arranged to catch debris before it reaches an appliance’s gas controls.\n\n**Inlet / manifold**\n\nThe inlet is where gas enters an appliance. The manifold distributes it to the burners inside. Pressure requirements at these two places can differ.\n\n**Combustion air / venting**\n\nCombustion air is air needed to burn fuel. Venting carries the resulting exhaust away.\n\n**Clearance / access**\n\nClearance is required space around equipment or piping. Access means being able to reach a part for inspection or service.\n\n**Code / commissioning**\n\nCode means installation rules adopted for the job’s location. Commissioning means checking and starting equipment according to its instructions, then confirming that it operates as required.\n\n- [Work through an appliance change ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/gas-pressure-and-sizing/#gl-worked-examples>)\n\n- [Read a real job through its photos ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#gl-field-notes>)\n\nLEARN THE SYSTEM / NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED\n\n## Gas lines, *one idea at a time.*\n\nFollow the gas through a home, change example appliance demands, or translate pressure units. Each lesson explains what the result means.\n\n### 1. Follow the gas\n\n### Follow the gas through the whole building.\n\nThe meter is outside. Inside, shared piping divides into branches for different appliances. Each appliance has a shutoff. Explore those connections together, then trace any appliance back to the supply.\n\nTHE WHOLE HOME / INSIDE & OUT\n\n#### One supply. Every connection.\n\n11 appliances. One connected building.\n Choose a part, inspect its shutoff, and trace its gas supply.\n\nExterior gas meter\n\nClick an appliance or shutoff. Every appliance stays in the building.\n\nHouse gas piping Appliance shutoffs Selected supply route\n\nClick equipment in the building, or find it here:\n\nSELECTED IN THE BUILDING\n\nOutside the home\n\n#### Utility service\n\nThe underground utility line brings gas to the meter installation outside. This is the supply for the whole building, before it divides into appliance branches.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nThe utility confirms its available service. A new appliance can require review of the meter and supply as well as work on your house piping.\n\nOutside · utility equipment\n\n#### Meter service shutoff\n\nThis valve is at the meter installation. It controls the supply to the whole system beyond it. It is different from the smaller shutoff serving one appliance.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nIdentify the equipment without operating it. If you suspect a leak, leave and call 911 and Enbridge from a safe place. Do not try to turn gas valves on or off.\n\nOutside · pressure control\n\n#### Utility regulator\n\nThe regulator reduces and controls the pressure of gas entering the meter installation. Pressure means the push that moves gas through the pipe.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nThe meter measures gas use, and the nearby regulator sets the delivery pressure. A house using higher-pressure distribution may have additional regulators before its appliances.\n\nOutside · measures gas use\n\n#### Exterior gas meter\n\nThe meter measures the gas passing into the property’s piping. In this building it is outside, beside the utility regulator and service shutoff.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nA meter has a limit to how much gas it can deliver under its specified conditions. Adding equipment can require a meter review, even when a nearby pipe connection is available.\n\nFrom outside to inside\n\n#### Entry through the wall\n\nAfter the meter, the customer piping enters the building through the exterior wall. The cutaway exposes that transition so you can follow it.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nProtection at the wall keeps sharp edges and building movement from damaging the pipe. Weather sealing closes the gap around the entry, and nearby supports keep its weight off that opening.\n\nInside the building\n\n#### Shared piping & branches\n\nThe larger shared route supplies smaller routes called branches. Each branch takes gas to equipment in a room or outside. The model reveals piping that could be concealed in a real house.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nAdding an appliance increases demand in the shared pipes feeding it. Follow the route back to the meter and include the other appliances supplied along that route.\n\nOne appliance at a time\n\n#### Appliance shutoffs\n\nEach yellow-handled valve in this model marks an appliance shutoff. It closes the supply to the appliance it serves. Click a valve to see which appliance it serves.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nEach appliance’s shutoff controls its gas branch and needs to remain reachable after cabinets or equipment are installed. Select “Find its shutoff” to trace that relationship.\n\nAfter the appliance shutoff\n\n#### Sediment traps\n\nA sediment trap is a short, capped pocket below a change in direction near an appliance. It helps catch debris before it reaches the appliance’s gas controls. Installers sometimes call it a drip leg.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nThis model shows sediment traps at the heating equipment, water heaters, fire pit, pool heater and generator. A trap collects debris before it reaches gas controls. A drip has the related job of collecting liquid in gas piping.\n\nKitchen\n\n#### Kitchen range\n\nThe range uses gas for cooking. Its branch ends at an appliance shutoff and the final connection. A cooktop is a related appliance without the oven.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nA replacement model can have a different fuel demand. The installer checks its instructions, supply and final connection together.\n\nKitchen · stops supply to this appliance\n\n#### Kitchen range shutoff\n\nThis is the shutoff on the branch serving the Kitchen range. In the model, follow the short section after this valve to see exactly which appliance it controls.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nThis valve controls the selected appliance branch. Before service, a technician checks the valve and connection and verifies that gas supply has actually been stopped. For a suspected leak, leave and use the utility’s emergency instructions.\n\nLaundry\n\n#### Gas dryer\n\nGas provides heat for drying; electricity powers the motor and controls. Follow its branch to find the dedicated shutoff.\n\n##### Why it matters\n\nThe dryer also needs electricity for its motor and controls, plus an exhaust route outdoors. Include those connections when planning its location.\n\nLaundry · stops supply to this appliance\n\n#### Gas dryer shutoff\n\nThis is the shutoff on the branch serving the Gas dryer. Add an appliance\n\n### What changes when you add another appliance?\n\nEnter appliance input ratings to see their combined demand. **BTU/h** means British thermal units per hour—the fuel energy an appliance needs. The starting values are practice numbers.\n\nExample appliance A · BTU/hExample appliance B · BTU/hNew example appliance · BTU/h\n\nSet an unused example to 0. Each entry accepts 0–10,000,000 BTU/h.\n\nTOTAL EXAMPLE DEMAND ON THE SHARED PIPE\n\n140,000 BTU/h\n\n40,000 + 100,000 + 0 = 140,000 BTU/h. The shared pipe serves all three example branches.\n\nThe total is the fuel demand on the shared pipe. Pipe sizing combines this demand with the route length, piping material, available pressure and the pressure needed at the appliances.\n\nThis lesson assumes all listed appliances could use their full rated fuel input at the same time. Use the total with the supply conditions, material and route in a pipe-capacity assessment.\n\n[Work through a heater replacement and an added grill ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/gas-pressure-and-sizing/#gl-worked-examples>)\n\n### 3. Read the pressure\n\n### Same pressure. Different units.\n\nTranslate a pressure value without changing what it means. **psi** means pounds-force per square inch. “Ounces” means ounces-force per square inch. **inWC** means inches of water column, another way to express pressure.\n\nExample pressure valueUnit of that value\n\nAccepts 0–1,000,000. For an appliance pressure setting, use the value in its installation manual.\n\nEQUIVALENT PRESSURE\n\n4 oz/in² = 0.25 psi = 6.92 inWC\n\nAll three values describe the same pressure. Converting units lets you compare a manometer reading with an appliance specification. Match the test point and operating condition stated in the manual.\n\n### Show the conversion and rounding\n\n1 psi = 16 oz/in² ≈ 27.68 inWC. Convert the entered value to psi, then multiply by 16 or 27.68 for the other units. Outputs are rounded to six significant digits. The units retain the same zero reference. For example, a gauge reading compares with surrounding air pressure; this calculation preserves that reference while converting the unit.\n\n[See why a reading with equipment off can miss a problem ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/gas-pressure-and-sizing/#gl-pressure-example>)\n\nJavaScript is off. The explanations and initial worked examples are shown above; enable JavaScript to change the example results.\n\nSTART WITH THE APPLIANCE\n\n## Where is the *new line going?*\n\nSend the appliance model and where you want it. We use its fuel demand and the route back to the meter to plan the line.\n\n01 / KITCHEN & LAUNDRY\n\n### Gas lines for stoves & dryers\n\nA gas range is a stove with an oven; a cooktop has burners without an oven. For either—or a gas dryer—we assess the supply, shutoff, connection and access. Share the new model even when an old appliance used the same location.\n\n[Stove & dryer connections explained ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/appliance-connections/#ap-kitchen>)\n\n02 / OUTDOOR LIVING\n\n### Gas lines for grills & fire pits\n\nNatural-gas piping for a BBQ, fire pit or patio heater. The appliance’s fuel type, outdoor location and any buried route belong in the plan from the start. Send the model and tell us whether the yard or patio is already finished.\n\n[Outdoor gas projects explained ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/appliance-connections/#ap-outdoor>)\n\n03 / HOT WATER & HEAT\n\n### Water heaters & boilers\n\nA tankless heater or new heating appliance can change the amount of gas the shared piping must carry. We check the model and existing system together.\n\n- [Water heater help ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/water-heater-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n- [Boiler guide ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/boiler-repair/?agentnet=md>)\n\n04 / LARGER APPLIANCES\n\n### Pool heaters & generators\n\nPlan the gas supply before ordering high-demand equipment. A larger meter or shared pipe may be needed alongside the new appliance branch.\n\n[Plan larger equipment connections ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/appliance-connections/#ap-large>)\n\n05 / CHANGES AT HOME\n\n### Remodels & extensions\n\nMoving a kitchen, finishing a basement or adding a fireplace? Plan the line before walls and ceilings close, and include any future appliances now.\n\n[See the installation process ↓](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#gl-price>)\n\n06 / AN EXISTING PROBLEM\n\n### Gas line repairs\n\nAfter the immediate hazard is handled, we assess damaged piping, failed connections and the work described in a utility or inspection notice.\n\n[Repair & restoration explained ↓](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#gl-repairs>)\n\nCHECKING THE EXISTING SUPPLY\n\n## Will the existing line *handle the new appliance?*\n\nWe trace the route to the meter and add up the demand of the appliances sharing each section. That shows which parts of the piping will carry the added gas.\n\n01\n\n### The utility supply\n\nThe utility confirms available service and how much gas the meter can deliver when a change is needed.\n\n02\n\n### Your house piping\n\nThe installer checks the route, material, pressure and appliances sharing each section.\n\n03\n\n### The appliance\n\nThe model’s instructions give its fuel input and the pressure needed where gas enters the appliance.\n\n### BTU: how much fuel?\n\nBTU stands for British thermal unit, a measure of heat energy. An appliance’s input rating in BTU per hour describes its fuel demand. Adding the input ratings shows the demand on shared piping.\n\n### Pressure: how it is supplied\n\nPressure is the push that moves gas through the piping. The supply must maintain the appliance’s specified inlet pressure while equipment is running.\n\n### Branch: a route off the main pipe\n\nA branch carries gas to part of the system. It may serve one appliance or several. Adding equipment means checking every shared section back toward the meter.\n\n### Black iron, CSST and an appliance connector—what is the difference?\n\nBlack iron is the common name for rigid steel gas pipe. CSST means corrugated stainless steel tubing: flexible building piping covered by a protective jacket. A short appliance connector makes the final connection to an appliance. Listed arc-resistant CSST systems such as FlashShield+ eliminate the manufacturer’s extra dedicated bonding-wire requirement. Standard gas-piping electrical bonding still applies, and a system containing conventional CSST still needs the extra bond.\n\n[See the tubing types, what bonding does and the manufacturer references ↗](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/gas-pipe-materials/#gl-csst-bonding>)\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-black-iron-csst-and-an-appliance-connector-what-is-the-difference>)\n\nFor meter or service changes: [Enbridge Gas Utah construction services ↗](<https://www.enbridgegas.com/utwyid/start-stop-service/construction-services>). We also repair customer-owned piping after a leak or utility shutoff. The quote lists the pipe work, connections, testing and permit or inspection arrangements.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-what-counts-as-gas-line-installation>)\n\n### Can you install a gas line for a new gas range or dryer?\n\nYes. Send the appliance model and location. We check the existing supply and plan the piping, shutoff and connector. If you are replacing an electric appliance, include its electrical and venting changes in the installation plan.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-can-you-install-a-gas-line-for-a-new-gas-range-or-dryer>)\n\n### Can you install a gas line for a tankless water heater?\n\nYes. A tankless heater can use substantially more gas while running than the tank it replaces. We calculate the new demand on its branch and the shared piping back to the meter, then identify any piping or meter upgrades.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-can-you-install-a-gas-line-for-a-tankless-water-heater>)\n\n### Can you run a gas line to an outdoor grill, fire pit or patio heater?\n\nYes. Send the appliance model and location, and tell us whether the route crosses a yard, deck or finished patio. Choose equipment made for the supplied fuel. A convertible propane appliance needs the manufacturer’s approved natural-gas conversion before use.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-can-you-run-a-gas-line-to-an-outdoor-grill-fire-pit-or-patio-heater>)\n\n### Can you install a gas line for a pool heater?\n\nYes. The heater’s fuel input, distance from the meter and other appliances sharing the route determine the supply needed. Send the model before installation so piping, pool work and any meter upgrade can be scheduled together.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-can-you-install-a-gas-line-for-a-pool-heater>)\n\n### Can you install a gas line for a whole-home or standby generator?\n\nYes, we handle the gas piping. Send the generator model and proposed location. Coordinate the pad, electrical connection and transfer switch—the device that switches the house between utility and generator power—with the other installers.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-can-you-install-a-gas-line-for-a-whole-home-or-standby-generator>)\n\n### What size gas line do I need?\n\nPipe size depends on appliance demand, route length, material, available pressure and the appliances sharing each section. The fuel input shown on the appliance label gives its demand in BTU per hour. We use that rating and the full route back to the meter to size the piping.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-what-size-gas-line-do-i-need>)\n\n### What is the difference between black iron pipe and CSST?\n\nBlack iron is rigid steel gas pipe. CSST stands for corrugated stainless steel tubing; its ridges let it bend around framing, and it uses matching fittings. Modern black-jacketed, arc-resistant systems such as FlashShield+ provide added electrical protection without the manufacturer’s extra dedicated CSST bonding wire. They still follow standard gas-piping electrical bonding requirements. Product markings identify the system; a run containing conventional CSST still needs the extra bond.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-what-is-the-difference-between-black-iron-pipe-and-csst>)\n\n### What about flexible gas connectors at the appliance?\n\nA short flexible connector joins an appliance to the nearby gas supply. Its listed capacity must cover the appliance’s demand, and its length and routing must fit the installation. The connector instructions also specify whether it can be reused.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-what-about-flexible-gas-connectors-at-the-appliance>)\n\n### Do you handle gas line work for home additions or remodels?\n\nYes. Kitchen moves, basement finishes and home additions can require new or relocated piping. Involve the plumber before framing is closed or cabinets are installed. We coordinate the agreed rough-in—the piping installed before finishes—with the contractor and other trades.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-do-you-handle-gas-line-work-for-home-additions-or-remodels>)\n\n### What about converting from propane to natural gas, or the reverse?\n\nCheck whether the appliance manufacturer offers a conversion for that model. Convertible equipment needs the specified parts and adjustments for the new fuel. We plan the gas piping and pressure around that fuel and coordinate the appliance conversion with the technician handling it.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-what-about-converting-from-propane-to-natural-gas-or-the-reverse>)\n\n### Price, permits and preparing for the visit\n\n### Do I need a permit for gas line work?\n\nNew lines and changes to gas piping commonly require a permit and inspection. The building department serving the address identifies the permit needed. Your proposal should name who obtains it and schedules inspection.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-do-i-need-a-permit-for-gas-line-work>)\n\n### Do you give pricing before starting gas line work?\n\nYes. We explain the work and price before starting. Route, access, appliance demand, permits and finish repairs affect the quote. Ask about any visit or diagnostic fee when scheduling.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-do-you-give-pricing-before-starting-gas-line-work>)\n\n### Can I text photos before booking gas line work?\n\nYes, for planned work. Send a wide view of the appliance location, visible piping and the model label or specification sheet. Leave connected equipment in place. If you suspect a gas leak, leave and use the emergency numbers above.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-can-i-text-photos-before-booking-gas-line-work>)\n\n### How quickly can you come out for gas line work?\n\nTell us your target date and appliance delivery date when scheduling. We will discuss the next available visit and allow for permits, inspections and any utility work.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-how-quickly-can-you-come-out-for-gas-line-work>)\n\n### How long does gas line installation take?\n\nAn exposed route usually needs less access work than piping behind finished ceilings or under a patio. The schedule also includes appliance delivery, permits, inspection and any utility work. We discuss the installation date and the expected date the appliance will be ready to use.\n\n[Link to this answer](<https://mtnmanplumbing.com/gas-line-installation/#answer-how-long-does-gas-line-installation-take>)\n\n### What should I do before the plumber arrives?\n\nHave the appliance model, proposed location, timing and any utility or inspection notice ready.
