The biggest building decade was the 1970s, with 3,947 parcels. The age mix changes across town: parcels with an 84121 address have a median build year of 1974 in our city sample. A construction year does not tell us which plumbing has since been replaced. Salt Lake City’s **2026 water-quality report, using 2025 data**, lists total hardness of 136 ppm at the Big Cottonwood treatment plant and 152 ppm at Little Cottonwood. Its wells and springs have a wider range. These are source-water results, not a hardness test at your house. Cottonwood Improvement District was created in **1955**. Its 2024 annual report describes a regional system that also receives sewage from both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Salt Lake City built a pumping plant at **2080 East and 6200 South** and a **30-inch wood-stave pipe** running east toward today’s I-215 crossing of Big Cottonwood Creek. It carried irrigation water from the East Jordan Canal. That let higher-bench farmers trade their canyon water to the city while keeping their fields watered. Drinking-water service to the exchange partners helped open the farmland to homes. The Butler Schoolhouse historical marker records a **July 1931 agreement** between Salt Lake City and the Brown & Sanford Irrigation Company. The city installed a culinary water system in exchange for company water. The marker also records eight fire hydrants added in 1935, then five more in 1948. [See the marker and its transcription ↗]() ### Before the trade: gravity. Later: pressure. Big Cottonwood’s original conduit began delivering water in 1907. It followed the foothills for 7.23 miles to Parleys Canyon, flowing by gravity. In 1982, a larger pressurized pipeline replaced that original conduit. The conduit and the wooden irrigation-exchange pipe were separate works. These dates describe public infrastructure, not the pipes in a particular house.
