Customer had an older widespread faucet that was leaking and they were ready to upgrade to something clean and modern. Should have been a quick job. Pull the faucet, drop in the new one, twenty minutes and out. Except when I got there to check things out the angle stops under the vanity were shot. Corroded shut, wouldnt close, classic old condo problem where the local valves havent been touched in years. That changed the whole job because in a high rise condo if your local shutoffs dont work you cant just isolate the unit and do the work. You have to coordinate with the building to shut down a bigger section of the water riser, which means involving the HOA, the building maintenance team, and sometimes the neighboring units too because depending on how the building is plumbed a shutoff for one unit can affect everyone on the floor or even the whole stack. Spent a chunk of time before the job even started just on the phone. Called the HOA to find out the building protocol for water shutoffs. Found out we needed advance notice. Coordinated with the building maintenance to figure out which valve actually isolated this specific unit without taking down the whole riser. Talked to a couple of the neighboring owners to give them a heads up in case anything went sideways and they noticed pressure changes. This kind of coordination is the part of plumbing that nobody talks about and that doesnt show up in a YouTube video. A small bathroom faucet job in a single family home is a couple hours and youre out. The same job in a 10th floor condo takes way more planning because the consequences of getting it wrong dont stop at the front door of one unit. Once everything was lined up and the building gave the green light I got back in to do the actual work. Pulled the old faucet, removed the supply lines, took out the drain assembly. The old widespread had been weeping at the base for a while and you could see the staining around where it sat on the travertine countertop. Cleaned the surface up so the new fixture would seat properly. Cut out the bad angle stops and put in new quarter turn ball valves while the building water was off. Doing it any other way would have meant a second building shutoff later when the bad valves inevitably failed and the customer was back to square one. While the water was already off it was a no brainer to upgrade them. Installed the new chrome widespread faucet. Set the deck plate, aligned the handles, made sure the spout sat where the customer wanted it. New braided stainless supply lines instead of reusing the old ones because at that age theyre on borrowed time anyway and youre already in there. New pop up drain assembly. Connected everything back up, opened the angle stops slowly, watched every joint for leaks while the system pressurized. Ran the faucet through full hot full cold and the mix range, ran water for a few minutes to test the drain flow under load, then checked every connection underneath one more time before packing up. Did the final walk through with the customer. Showed them the new shutoffs underneath, made sure they knew which valves were theirs versus which were building stuff they shouldnt touch. Texted the HOA and the maintenance contact to let them know the work was done and water could go back to normal building flow. Job took longer than a typical bathroom faucet replacement because half the work was coordination not plumbing. But the customer got a faucet that doesnt leak, a clean modern fixture that matches the rest of their bathroom, and they didnt have to deal with HOA paperwork or angry neighbors. Not all small jobs are easy.
